Courts remands 60 IPOB Members as FG Gazettes its Proscription

Court orders detention of 60 IPOB members

The Abuja High Court also allowed the government to designate the group as a terrorist organization.

The motion has the IPOB leader as the only applicant and the Chief of Army Staff as the only respondent.

Justice Kafarati consequently granted the application and directed the federal government to gazette IPOB'S proscription order and published it in two national daily newspapers.

According to the movement, had the military not stopped IPOB and Kanu, the path they were threading was on the verge of making Igbos lose what they had toiled to build in other parts of Nigeria in the past five decades given the way they needlessly antagonized other ethnic groups, including calling for their death.

The group also declared his parents, HRM Eze Israel Kanu and Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Kanu, missing.

"The invading soldiers who had direct contact with the applicant on this fateful day (14th September 2017) should be in a position to produce the applicant before the court". The Army had been slammed for overreaching its powers over the move.

Merkel bloc wins election but faces far-right challenge
The xenophobic party ran on an anti-immigrant platform with an emphasis on closing Germany's borders to migrants. Merkel on Friday night told supporters in Munich not to be complacent with her bloc's lead.

Kanu was detained for over a year and half on charges of treason and was only released on strict bail conditions in April this year.

But in an interview with AFP shortly after the return to Nigeria from London by President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Mohammed said the IPOB leader could be in hiding.

This is coming just many days after the Nigerian army clashed with IPOB in Umuahia, Abia state after it launched a military exercise tagged Operation Egwu Eke II or Operation Python Dance II in the south Eastern states of Nigeria. IPOB is described as a separatist group wanting to breakaway from Africa's most populous nation.

Members of the group have occasionally clashed with members of Nigeria's security apparatus during protests.

Recall that the South-East governors had proscribed the activities of IPOB in the region after the army's pronouncement that IPOB is a terrorist organisation.
