Miracles needed to unlock next Brexit stage in October:Juncker

Juncker speaks to the press in Tallinn

"At the end of this week I am saying that that there will be no sufficient progress from now until October unless miracles would happen", he told reporters at the summit in Tallinn.

While she carefully avoided the apparent threat to withdraw co-operation in her letter triggering the start of the Article 50 talks on Britain's withdrawal, she nevertheless underlined the UK's contribution as one of the most capable military powers in the EU.

Brussels' chief negotiator Michel Barnier warned Britain could face months of wrangling before the European Union is ready to open talks on future trade deals.

After British Prime Minister Theresa May had called for a transition period of two years after Brexit in which the United Kingdom would continue paying to the European Union budget in 2019 and 2020 in return for keeping access to European Union markets as well as keeping the rights of European Union nationals living in the United Kingdom at the current level, Mr. Davis said that his negotiating team had this week laid out details of how a transition period could work in reality.

"A Downing Street spokesman said Mrs May also emphasised the need to agree a" time-limited" transition period after Brexit "to provide certainty to businesses and others in both Britain and the EU".

The statement followed the end of the fourth round of UK-EU Brexit negotiations on Thursday, at which the UK and EU reportedly made "some progress" on the EU citizens issue.

Mr Johnson and Mr Davis often top the list as May replacements.

Defence cooperation between India and the U.S. has gone up significantly
The US had hoped for Delhi to play a bigger role in Afghanistan after unveiling its new strategy for the region last month . Mattis said the talks covered ways to further enhance defense trade and technology collaboration between defense industries.

"Backstabbing, betrayal, noble families fighting for power".

Attending the Tallinn Digital Summit in Estonia today, Mrs May held a series of bilateral meetings with fellow heads of state, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło.

She said: "Our resolve to draw on the full weight of our military, intelligence, diplomatic and development resources to lead worldwide action with our partners on the issues that affect the security and prosperity of our peoples is unchanged".

"It's positive that Theresa May's speech made it possible to unblock the situation to some extent and give a new dynamic", Mr Barnier said at a news conference Thursday, adding that "useful" talks were had on the contentious subject of the bill.

But after another week of talks in Brussels, EU negotiators said there had not been enough progress yet to move to the next phase of discussions on a transition period after Brexit or a future trade deal.

But Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Union executive and long a bogeyman for Britain's eurosceptic press, said the first stage of talks on the rights of expatriates, the border with European Union member Ireland and the financial settlement when Britain leaves had not gone far enough.

The major sticking point remains the post-Brexit role of the European Court of Justice.
