Columbus Statues in Connecticut Vandalized

Christopher Columbus may not be as popular now as he was when the USA capital and a national holiday were named in his honor, but a majority of Americans still hold him in high regard.

"Christopher Columbus' legacy of extreme violence, enslavement, and brutality is not in dispute", O'Farrell said, according to CNN affiliate KCAL.

City officials did not say they were going to cover up the statue, but Christopher Columbus monuments in other cities like NY have been defaced.

A movement to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day has gained momentum in some parts of the United States, with Los Angeles in August becoming the biggest city yet to decide to stop celebrating the explorer and instead recognize victims of colonialism. Some in the Italian-American community have pushed back against the idea of dropping Columbus Day, seeing it as an erasure of the man and what his achievements mean to some Italian-Americans.

People have been honoring him since it was made a public holiday in 1937. As most people in this country either immigrated or had ancestors who immigrated to this country, the discovery of the New World was important to us. Christopher Columbus didn't reach the U.S.

On the other hand, several cities have rejected proposals for them to proclaim Indigenous Peoples Day, including Cincinnati, Ohio, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

And most Americans - 76 percent - believe historical figures like Columbus should be judged by the standards of conduct of their own times and not by modern standards.

Netflix raises subscription prices for most USA viewers
The prices are already in effect for new sign-ups and will be rolling out to existing customers later this month, Netflix said . The plans, which offer consumers HD and either 2 or 4 screens at a time to watch, will change to $10.99 and $13.99.

"It was one of the things that would allow them to become Americans symbolically", said Fred Gardaphe, a professor of Italian-American studies at Queens College.

Minnesota, Alaska, and Vermont all celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day.

So let's change the question: Should we actively appreciate Christopher Columbus?

Earlier this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed a special commission to review all statues on city property that may be offensive, including the statue of Columbus in Columbus Circle.

On a municipal level, celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day is a shift adopted in some parts of the country. Onlookers waved Italian and American flags, although long stretches of the parade route were empty of spectators. "And while we can't change the past, we can acknowledge and make that history right today". In 1970, the holiday was attached to the second Monday of October.

"Columbus should not be celebrated".

"Let's say I'm Irish and you want to change St. Patrick's Day", he said.
