North Korea Apparently Tried To Hack Into American Power Companies

UK draws up battle plan in case of North Korea war

South Korean analysts say the nighttime flights, and also the decisions by Washington and Seoul to release the itinerary of the warplanes, are aimed at sending a clear warning to North Korea and demonstrating capability for surprise attacks.

"FireEye devices detected and stopped spear phishing emails sent on September 22, 2017, to USA electric companies by known cyber threat actors likely affiliated with the North Korean government", the infosec outfit reported on Tuesday.

Trump has responded with a series of bellicose statements, prompting a war of words with Pyongyang, which in turn has threatened to shoot US bombers out of the sky and fire missiles into the waters near Guam.

Two U.S. B-1 bombers carried out a training exercise on Tuesday with Japanese and South Korean military aircraft in the vicinity of the Sea of Japan, the U.S. military said, amid growing tension over North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.

The U.S. bombers took off from the Andersen Air Force base in Guam, the U.S. Pacific territory that North Korea singled out as a possible target for a missile strike over the summer, as President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un engaged in bombastic rhetoric and brinkmanship.

On Tuesday, a South Korean lawmaker said North Korean hackers had reportedly stolen a large cache of military documents from his country, including a wartime contingency plans drawn up by the US and South Korea.

Like a threat from Trump: Silence before the Storm
He also highlighted recovery efforts in Puerto Rico , and said America will not rest until Puerto Rico is back on its feet. One of the islands most affected by the hurricane's wrath was US territory Puerto Rico.

"While I would not characterize them as the best in the world, they are among the best in the world and the best organized", Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the Senate past year.

Reports of reconnaissance on U.S. utilities follow earlier reports alleging DPRK spies stole a large cache of military documents from South Korea, including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un.

Outside governments and worldwide human rights organizations say Kim rules as a tyrant over a largely malnourished and abused population while enjoying a luxurious lifestyle backed up by a weapons program almost advanced enough to viably target the US mainland with nuclear-tipped missiles.

The South's Yonhap news agency quoted Lee as saying that 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken. North Korean hackers were the prime suspects in the attack, the impact of which may have been exaggerated for propaganda purposes. Other stolen data included contingency plans for South Korean special forces and information on military facilities and power plants, he said.

North Korea has yet to comment on either the bombing drills or the hacking claims.
