Victim of revenge porn? Facebook wants you to send in your nudes

Back in April, Facebook took steps aimed at combating revenge porn in Canada and the U.S., allowing users to flag an image they suspect was posted without consent. Once the image is sent, Facebook can use technology to "hash" it, which means Facebook creates a traceable digital fingerprint or link. Then the social networking firm, in collaboration with e-Safety, wants the users to upload their intimate photos directly to their messenger.

The ABC reports one in five women in Australia between the ages of 18 and 45 have been victims of "image-based abuse". If another user tries to upload the same image on Facebook or Instagram, Facebook will test it against its stored hashes, and stop those labeled as revenge porn from being distributed. "So if somebody tried to upload that same image, which would have the same digital footprint or hash value, it will be prevented from being uploaded", Grant said.

Facebook had come up with another anti-revenge porn feature in April earlier this year.

"This partnership gives Australians a unique opportunity to proactively inoculate themselves from future image-based abuse by coming to our portal and reporting tool", said Julie Inman Grant, Australia's eSafety Commissioner, in a statement. Facebook knows that there will be many people concerned about how it handles such sensitive content, and I imagine they have put a good deal of thought into minimising the chances that anything goes wrong.

No official confirmation on the number of casualties has been made as of yet, however, the number of deceased is expected to rise. Singhal said, "We will reach a final conclusion only after the post-mortem reports arrive".

Anxious that an abusive ex may upload intimate images of you to social media? Further, Facebook is asking all its users - at least in Australia for the moment - to comply with the above to deny anyone the chance to post sexually explicit material that the user might be part of.

The new method is being practiced in Australia, the US, the United Kingdom and Canada as a preventative tool in combating sextortion.

But one expert says there will still be problems outside Facebook and related sites such as WhatsApp and Instagram. "It is quite counterintuitive to send such intimate images to an unknown recipient and Facebook will need to be able to reassure people that they have the right measures in place to protect them", Whiston-Dew added. If the same photo is uploaded then it will thwart the same and prevent it from distribution.
