Manus Island: Police enter former Australia-run asylum centre

“We Are Under Attack” 100 PNG Police Storm Manus Island Detention Camp

Baki, the police commissioner, had said Tuesday that his officers would not use force to move the men, with PNG police adding in a statement that "the refugees will be asked politely to pack up and voluntarily leave the centre".

Turnbull dismissed asylum seekers' fears for their safety in Lorengau, accusing them of trying to pressure Australia into resettling them by refusing to move from Manus.

We are under attack'.

"They had a really big microphone in their hands and started telling people 'you have to move, '" refugee Abdul Aziz Adam told the BBC.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the refugees and other detainees should obey the directions of PNG police.

Another refugee, Iranian reporter Behrouz Boochani, was briefly detained.

"They are destroying our rooms and throwing away our belongings", tweeted one man.

"If, as the case appears to be, he has been targeted and arrested because of his profile and his role as a journalist in an attempt to silence him, this is an egregious attack on press freedom that can not be let stand".

The journalist, a prominent voice within the centre, later tweeted that he had been "handcuffed" for more than two hours and had his belongings broken.

The center closed on October 31 and officials urged a small number of refugees to "apply" for a transfer to the detention center in Nauru and for the remaining men to return home or move to one of three transit centers near Lorengau, the main town on Manus Island, only one of which is reported to have medical facilities. Asylum seekers have been attacked in the past, rights groups say.

"The early morning action follows repeated deadlines issued - but not enforced - by the PNG government over the three weeks since the centre was shut down", The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

With each step the resolve of the men who want to remain there seems only to have increased. The government is knowingly placing the refugees at risk, ' Ms Schuetze said.

Amnesty has long called for the camp on Manus Island to be closed and the refugees brought to safety in Australia.

Police said they did not arrest him however Mr Boochani was seen being removed in handcuffs.

Their intervention follows several street marches in Australian cities condemning Australia's treatment of asylum seekers on Papua New Guinea.

The United Nation's refugee agency said parts of the alternative accomodation remained "under construction", lacked proper security and didn't provide "the most basic services" including medical care.

Canberra has steadfastly ruled out allowing the men into Australia, arguing it would prompt further human trafficking and lead to deaths at sea.

"It is really one of the scariest days and one of the awful days that we have experienced since we came to Manus Island and everyone is really depressed and exhausted but people are just saying the same thing that we do not want to leave this place because we are exhausted of being in prison, from one prison to another prison".

"PNG has aided and enabled Australia's policy of cruelty and degradation of the refugees".
