Cam Newton: NFL asks for explanation over Carolina Panthers treatment

Cam Newton

Ultimately, Jordan does have a lot of respect for Newton, who is one of the hardest quarterbacks in the National Football League to corral, although the Saints star sacked him once on Sunday, batted down two passes, forced a pivotal intentional grounding penalty and helped Vonn Bell clean up Newton on the game's final play. The Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,000 by the NFL last month for their handling of a concussion evaluation of quarterback Russell Wilson after the league and players' union determined that the protocols had not been followed properly in that case.

However, Carolina announced during the game Newton was "evaluated for a concussion and cleared" after he was hit by Saints defensive lineman David Onyemata.

It appears that the review will focus on whether Newton fell on his way to the Panthers' sideline after absorbing a fourth-quarter hit or was told by a member of Carolina's medical staff to drop to his knees. He sat out one play, but returned on the next series and finished the game.

But the inquest into how the Panthers handled what looked like a head injury to Cam Newton is just beginning.

The Panthers' handling Sunday of Newton's injury drew criticism by Chris Nowinski, the founding CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation.

No violations were found in an investigation of the Houston Texans' decision to clear quarterback Tom Savage despite visible concussion-like symptoms on the field. A sideline evaluation in the medical tent is not sufficient, under the late-season rule change.

Jordan got the last word by making the game-saving play in Sunday's 31-26 victory over the Panthers in their wild-card playoff game - plowing through two blockers to force an intentional grounding penalty (although Carolina coach Ron Rivera disagreed with the grounding call).

"I hate that I couldn't do enough to get a win today for a lot of guys I think highly of", Newton said.

'NFL concussion protocol should have dictated taking out Cam Newton and examining him immediately after direct hit to his head, ' Pat Leonard wrote. "We're going to send him a nice little bottle of Jordan wine".

"I'm not here to make that type of judgment", Jordan said in the Saints' postgame locker room.

"Yeah, you know, Carolina picked him up so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said.
