Trump Administration Tells 200000 Salvadorans To Leave Or Get Deported

Last year the administration ended those protections for citizens of Haiti and Nicaragua

If forced to leave the country, they could face grave danger in El Salvador.

According to a Department of Homeland Security announcement sent to lawmakers Monday morning, Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen determined that conditions in El Salvador had improved significantly enough to end the Salvadorans' deportation protection.

Salvadorans make up the largest portion of individuals covered by so-called temporary protected status, which shields about 320,000 people in the USA from deportation, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Nielsen said the fact that over 39,000 Salvadorans have been repatriated over the past two years shows that "the temporary inability of El Salvador to adequately return their nationals after the natural disaster has been addressed".

Salvadoran President Salvador Sánchez Cerén phoned Nielsen on Friday and appealed her to extend TPS, according to the Washington Post. In January 2017, an estimated 325,000 migrants from 13 TPS-designated countries resided in the United States. South Sudanese immigrants' protected status was extended until May 2019.

The administration of President Donald Trump on Monday terminated a program that shielded more than 260,000 Salvadoran immigrants from deportation.

Washington granted TPS to tens of thousands of Salvadorans in 2001, following a 7.6 magnitude quake in El Salvador that killed 944 people and injured over 5,500. "By returning TPS recipients to El Salvador, the United States could be sending people to their deaths".

Sears to close more than 100 stores, including Mandeville Kmart
Three of the Sears stores are in Texas, one each in Austin on I-35, in Houston on Highway 6 and in Midland on North Midkiff Road. Sears had already been planning to downsize in Orland Park , where it's been an anchor store since the mall opened in 1976.

In September 2016, the Obama administration extended protections for 18 months, saying El Salvador suffered lingering harm from the 2001 earthquakes that killed more than 1,000 people and was temporarily unable to absorb such a large number of people.

The administration will notify the Salvadorans they have until September 9, 2019 to leave the United States or find a new way to obtain legal residency, according to a copy of the announcement prepared by the Department of Homeland Security that will be published Monday morning...

The five leading industries in which TPS beneficiaries from these countries work are: construction (51,700), restaurants and other food services (32,400), landscaping services (15,800), child day care services (10,000), and grocery stores (9,200). Trump said in September that he was ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, but gave Congress until March to act.

The U.S. created Temporary Protected Status in 1990 to provide safe havens for people from countries affected by earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, war and other disasters, and it now shields almost 320,000 people from 10 countries.

The benefit, which includes work authorization, can be renewed up to 18 months at a time by the Homeland Security secretary.

There is one area of agreement between the groups on the right like FAIR and NumbersUSA and advocates on the left who say ending temporary protected status for El Salvador would be an unnecessary and cruel move - Nielsen's decision will toss a political hot potato to Congress. She delayed a decision affecting more than 50,000 Hondurans, leaving that decision to Nielsen.

"It's sad, because it's the same story of family separation from that time, and now history repeats itself with my children", Zepeda said in Spanish.
