UNRWA vows to go on after Israel's call to scrap agency

UNRWA vows to go on after Israel's call to scrap agency

President Donald Trump's suggestion to cut funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to the Palestinians is a serious mistake both politically and morally ("Palestinians, Israelis oppose USA aid threat", January 4).

Now, Israel is being told by another global power that it will ultimately have to "share" Jerusalem with the Palestinian Authority, which claims the eastern half of the Holy City as its capital.

Last week, UNRWA Spokesman Chris Gunness said his organization was not informed of any changes to United States contributions to the UN agency.

Incitement to terror against Israel in UNRWA schools along with the documented use of its facilities as storage spaces for Hamas rockets and weapons have made the agency the target of vociferous criticism by Israeli officials.

Mr Netanyahu said UNRWA was "an organisation that perpetuates the Palestinian problem".

The report was based on audio recordings obtained by the Times, in which Ashraf al-Kholi, the Intelligence officer, can be heard telling the hosts that Egypt, like its "Arab brothers, are denouncing this matter", but that "after that, this thing will become a reality".

Now it is limited to those who reside in UNRWA's "areas of operation in the Palestinian territories (West Bank and Gaza Strip), Lebanon, Jordan and Syria", UNRWA's website says. "This absurdity has to stop", he declared.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians either fled or were forced from their homes during the war that led to Israel's establishment in 1948. In 2012, an estimated 30,000-50,000 were still alive but there were an additional 4,950,000 "registered patrilineal descendants" of the original refugees, 1.5 million of them living in UNRWA camps.

Is Matt Patricia set to spurn the Lions for the Giants?
Leonard suggests Patricia could hire Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll due to their time spent together in New England. Many believed he'd be headed to the Lions, but it has since been reported that he favors the Giants over the other two teams.

Earlier Saturday, Jordan's King Abdullah II met the Arab diplomats and said "the question of Jerusalem must be resolved within the framework of a just and lasting peace agreement between Palestinians and Israelis".

On Wednesday Trump threatened to cut $300 million in annual aid to the Palestinians in an attempt to force them to the negotiating table.

The U.S. government, which supplies UNRWA with $369 million per year, recently froze a $125 million transfer that was supposed to keep the agency afloat at the beginning of the year.

USA -brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed in 2014 and a bid by President Donald Trump's administration to restart them have shown little sign of progress.

The agency also provides aid to teacher training centers, health clinics and social services.

Netanyahu said UNRWA was "an organization that perpetuates the Palestinian problem".

"In an extreme situation, the administration of those refugees could fall on Israel's shoulders".
