No deal after Trump, Schumer meet as shutdown looms

Democratic US Senator Chuck Schumer is seen as holding the key to a deal to avert a government shutdown

The House passed a short-term funding bill on Thursday, but Senate Democrats and a few Republican senators have signaled they may oppose the measure.

The disagreement that could cause the shutdown - a costly political move for either party - comes after the collapse of bipartisan talks on a United States spending bill that hinged on continued protections under the DACA programme for undocumented immigrants, which Democrats support. Angus King, an independent from Maine.

And Jeff Flake, of Arizona, said on Thursday night he was not "inclined" to vote for the short-term bill.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., runs to catch a subway auto as he returns to his office on Capitol Hill as Congress moves closer to the deadline to avoid a government shutdown, in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018. "That is a very basic and fundamental duty". Among them: a feeling that Trump's stunning comment in a private meeting last week calling for less immigration from "shithole" countries in Africa has put the onus on Republicans to show sympathy for the "Dreamers" — the roughly 700,000 young people brought to the US illegally as children.

A competing bipartisan bill offered by Democratic and Republican Senators that does include an extension of DACA also now falls short of the 60 votes needed for cloture, and has been rejected by the President.

All of this torpedoes the White House's jumbled attempt to blame Democrats for the fate of federal government, even though Republicans today control the federal government.

The White House remains optimistic the stopgap measure will pass.

Several Democrats who voted for the last continuing resolution including both senators from Virginia and New Mexico announced in the past 24 hours that they would vote against this current proposal.

"It's really nearly like amateur hour", she told reporters at her weekly news briefing.

With mere hours before the government runs out of funding congressional leaders were still negotiating over a short-term spending bill that would appease at least a dozen Democrats.

Why the US government shut down and what it means

Lindsey Graham, of SC, says he is opposed because he wants more military spending and an immigration deal.

Colorado GOP Senator Cory Gardner said in tweets he would support a DACA and CHIP compromise but he did not rule out voting for a measure precluding those issues. Adding CHIP funding was good political strategy, he said, because Democrats would have to explain why they voted against it. It's unclear how a government shutdown would affect either party in this year's midterm elections in November.

While reluctant to pass yet another short-term continuing resolution - the fourth in just months - many rank-and-file members seemed mostly resigned Wednesday to the fact that it was the only option, even if they were not happy about it. A GOP aide said Republican leaders were angling to keep the measure as it was presented initially to lawmakers, but didn't rule out adding provisions - like pay raises for the military - to sweeten the deal.

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, leaving a meeting with other deputy leaders, rejected the idea that an immigration deal could be concluded by Friday at midnight. A Washington Post-ABC News poll out Friday showed 48 percent of Americans pin the blame for a potential shutdown on Trump and Republicans, while 28 percent fault Democrats.

But Trump was incorrect to state a government shutdown would equate to "shutting down our military". The last time there was a shutdown in 2013, 850,000 federal government workers were furloughed.

But the upper chamber is set for a nail-biting vote, with Republicans and Democrats still split on immigration. McConnell and Ryan were aware that the White House was going to invite Schumer to the White House, one Republican source said.

"If we can't agree, your party has the majority in the House and the Senate to pass your own funding resolution". And we can give ourselves the time we need to finish ongoing negotiations on DACA, border security and the long-term needs of our military.

The president fired back at Democrats during a trip to Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, arguing they're pushing for a shutdown to distract voters from the GOP's tax cuts.

Participants at the meeting with Kelly quoted the retired general and former head of the Department of Homeland Security as saying Trump was not "fully informed" when he made the wall promise. - President Donald Trump will once again make his way to Palm Beach County on Friday.
