A New Study On Cell Phone Radiation Raises More Questions

The reason that this concern staring spreading is because cell phones emit radiation.

There's an ongoing debate about whether cellphones can give you cancer - especially brain cancer, since our phones spend so much time near our faces.

The 10-year, $25 million toxicological studies are the most comprehensive assessments to date of health effects and exposure to radio frequency radiation in rats and mice, according to the online notice from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a unit of the National Institutes of Health, the USA medical research agency.

"In our complete evaluation, we again had a lower level of certainty that small increases in the numbers of male rats with tumors in the brains were associated with exposures to cell phone radio-frequency radiation". But don't read too much into that, experts say - because those radiation exposures were much bigger than even the heaviest cellphone users would experience. Female rats exposed to the radiation didn't, and neither male nor female mice showed obvious health problems in a second study. In particular, scientists could not find hard evidence for concern about brain tumors.

Rats and mice were bombarded for nine hours a day for up to two years with a radiation level so high that humans would only experience it briefly, such as when a phone with a weak signal expends more energy searching for a stronger one, Bucher said in a news conference.

While the drafts of these studies are yet to be reviewed by other scientists, the FDA (Federal Communication Commission) limits the amount of radiofrequency radiation that can come out of the cellphones. The toxicology program is headquartered at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. "These findings are termed "equivocal evidence of carcinogenic activity, ' meaning it was unclear if the tumors were related to the exposures", said John Bucher, the National Toxicology Program's senior scientist, and studies" leader. The difference could simply be the result of chance, STAT News reports.

Clinton Issues Statement Explaining Why She Shielded Sexual Harasser in 2008
She refused to apologize for keeping Strider on, but did say that if she had to do it again, she "wouldn't". He needed to be punished, change his behavior, and understand why his actions were wrong.

The reports, along with earlier research show that current limits for mobile phone radiation, "remain acceptable for protecting the public health", Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in an emailed statement.

The reports also point out statistically significant increases in the number of rats and mice with tumors found in other organs at one or more of the exposure levels studied, including the brain, prostate gland, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, liver, and pancreas.

So, what do these results in rodents mean for people?

Notably, these studies were done using 2G and 3G frequencies and not the high-speed and advanced 4G and 5G networks.

Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, noted that the studies were negative for common tumors. "The evidence for an association between cellphones and cancer is weak, and so far, we have not seen a higher cancer risk in people", Brawley told the AP in a phone interview. "Even with frequent daily use by the vast majority of adults, we have not seen an increase in events like brain tumors". "I am actually holding my cellphone up to my ear".
