Trudeau doesn't think Trump will pull U.S. out of Nafta

The foreign ministers of Canada and Mexico have said the current renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will end up with a "win-win-win" situation for North America. It served notice that whatever Trump's message is on trade, many in his party will not stand with him if he makes good on his threats to withdraw from the accord between the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

"The U.S. Apple Association (USApple) is pleased President Trump used his State of the Union address as a platform to speak about the importance of free and fair trade".

If the president had wandered the halls of Capitol Hill earlier that day, he might have overheard former prime minister Brian Mulroney giving an impassioned defence of NAFTA before the U.S. Senate committee on foreign relations. The sixth round of the renegotiation talks ended on Monday in Montreal, Canada, as the U.S. asked for the process to be accelerated.

Michigan Farm Bureau National Legislative Counsel John Kran says Michigan farmers, more than any other state, have the most to win or lose, based on NAFTA's future. In 2014, more than 125,000 small businesses exported $136 billion to Canada or Mexico. "And that's a reason for guarded optimism", he said.

"I'm optimistic that the buyer-seller relationships developed over 30-plus years will continue and Michigan Black Beans will continue to be consumed in Mexico", he said.

Mr Trudeau's comments on Wednesday were among the most positive made by any Canadian official since talks started previous year to revamp the deal, which Mr Trump calls a disaster that killed off many United States manufacturing jobs.

Worldwide trade has widespread economic benefits for the United States. Canada's challenge to USA anti-dumping and countervailing duties practices, launched at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on December 20, 2017, by requesting consultations with the United States, referencing systematic violations of relevant WTO rules in US trade remedies proceedings against Canadian exports and those of other countries had also increased tensions in the lead up to this round.

Trudeau jeered at BC town hall by Kinder Morgan protesters
"I specifically took issue with him about that characterization", Notel said of a Thursday conversation with Trudeau . Trudeau was pressed by members of the audience about Canada's ability to clean up an oil spill.

Controversial changes, such as the possibility for mandated renegotiation every five years, will only cause market uncertainties to the detriment of the USA economy.

"I'd be surprised if they go as far as progressives would like them to do, but we're encouraged by what they're trying", said Robert Scott, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank. To do so, the president must formally request a continuation of TPA from the U.S. Congress by April 1.

There have since been six rounds of negotiations, most recently one held last week in Montreal that was supposed to be the final one.

US negotiators were quick to dismiss Canada's latest ideas concerning both electric and driverless cars.

"Agriculture is a big industry in all three countries and the negotiating teams have a big appreciation for agriculture's contributions", he added.

"You can never predict when things are going to get wrapped up", he said.

Eduardo Solis, head of Mexico's main auto industry group AMIA, has advocated for not touching the rules of origin, saying that he needed to ensure that North America's auto industry remained competitive.
