Amazon is removing ads from the lock screen on Prime Exclusive phones

Prime Exclusive Phones

The phones are sold unlocked and at a discount, but customers had the option to remove the lockscreen ads with an additional payment.

Amazon will ditch lock screen ads starting February 7, 2018, and current device owners will have ads removed. The update will arrive as an update to the Amazon Offers app on Google Play. Those with an Amazon Prime Exclusive phone will receive a free update, starting this week, that will remove existing lockscreen offers and ads.

Currently, Android phones on the Amazon Prime Exclusive Phones program display Amazon deals and offers on their lock screens. The retailer states that the change is meant to make the user experience better, by letting owners use the increasingly more prevalent fingerprint readers and unlocking features that bypass the lock screen.

Thursday Night Football coming to FOX
Thursday Night Football offers fans less downtime from week to week in consuming football, though it has come with some criticism. NFL Network also televise seven games exclusively, fulfilling its agreement with cable and satellite operators.

A Wednesday update will disable the ads, which Amazon says "allows you to personalize your Prime Exclusive Phone's lockscreen and to more easily use your phone's unlock technologies, such as facial recognition and fingerprint sensors". The program has since expanded to include phones from LG and Nokia, and there are now seven phones available via the program on Amazon's website. Amazon confirmed that it will continue offering discounted prices on certain unlocked Android phones, paired with easy access to Prime benefits for Prime members.

For example, the Moto G5 Plus costs $200 on Amazon's program, whereas it costs $230 from Motorola's site.

As of Tuesday, you have a pretty decent choice of phones from the Amazon Exclusive Phones program. At the very least, if you're a Prime member in the market for a new phone, it's worth a look. By purchasing an Amazon Prime Exclusive Phone, you go into it knowing that you are buying a phone that will show you Amazon ads in order to secure it at a cheaper rate.
