IAEA report shows Iran upholding nuclear agreement

Abbas Araghchi right said the 2015 deal was a “success story” for everyone but Iran

Trump has constantly criticised the pact inked between Iran and Russia, Britain, France, China, the United States and Germany, in which the West promised to relieve sanctions on Tehran in exchange for a halt in Iran's efforts to develop a nuclear weapon.

Trump's three major issues with the deal are its failure to address the Iranian ballistic missile program, the rights of global inspectors to visit Iranian nuclear sites, and so-called "sunset" clauses which only limit Iran's nuclear activity for 10 years.

He wants all three strengthened if the United States is to stay in the JCPOA.

In exchange of Iran scaling back its nuclear programme, sanctions on its economy were lifted, and Tehran was allowed to resume trading oil and gas on the worldwide market.

The IAEA report also said that Iran informed it in January of a decision to "construct naval nuclear propulsion in future".

It was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi today (Thursday).

On January 12, Trump once again extended the waivers that are mandatory under the deal reached between Iran and six major world powers in 2015, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Despite that, big banks have continued to stay away for fear of falling foul of remaining USA sanctions - something that has hampered Iran's efforts to rebuild foreign trade and lure investment.

Mr Araghchi added that Iran-backed militia such as Lebanon's Hezbollah - which has also fought in Syria on the side of the Syrian government - existed to confront Israel.

Iran could walk away from the 2015 nuclear deal if it doesn't realize the economic benefits it was expecting from the deal, the nation's deputy foreign minister told an audience in London, Reuters reported Thursday. Iran has yet to respond, the report said.

While campaigning in 2016, Donald Trump often criticised the Iran nuclear deal as an abject failure for the U.S. and even threatened last month to pull out of the deal entirely. He added that losing the deal would mean the world would face "another nuclear crisis". When it was signed, then-President Obama hailed the accords as a way to stop Iran from gaining access to nuclear weapons. "Although the USA administration and Mr Trump are talking about sunset clause and that JCPOA is just for 10 years, that is not true", he said.
