Indian surgeons remove 'heaviest' brain tumour

Santlal Pal with his wife and Dr Trimurti Nadkarni at Nair hospital after surgery

Doctors at Mumbai's BYL Nair hospital where he was treated said the tumour was so large "it appeared as if he had two heads mounted on top of each other".

But in a seven-hour operation, surgeons successfully removed a massive tumour along with skull bone which had invaded into the brain.

Also, 10 percent of the tumor grew within the man's skull.

Pal is now recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit and in stable condition.

News of the procedure was made public recently after the hospital ensured the surgery was successful as the patient, Santlal Pal, had recovered, doctors at the facility said.

The Hindu news site reported that Pal's brain tumor had been growing for several years - most rapidly in the past year. The doctors said that the tumor resulted in Pal losing his eyesight but hoped that he would regain his vision now. He feels relieved of "a large burden on his head"'. The tumor had protruded from his skull, and his scalp grew over it. Nadkarni said that they had to cut Pal's scalp open to remove the tumor, and make an opening in the skull in order to excise the entire tumor resting inside.

Since our reconciliation system was very tight we could catch the attack in three attempts. The Indian Consulate in Instanbul is now working to help repatriate that amount.

Prior to treatment at Nair Hospital, Mr Pal and his wife Manju sought treatment at three Uttar Pradesh hospitals, but doctors at all locations told the family that the tumor was inoperable.

After the surgery was completed on February 14, Mr Pal was kept unconscious on ventilator support for three days.

The doctors said that the pressure on the brain led to the patient losing his eyesight. "Even the scalp vessels had become tortuous and dilated", said Nadkarni.

There are numerous types of brain tumors, and surgical removal has its own risks. The tumor was totally excised along with involved skull bone and that which had invaded the brain.

"Now it's a matter of recovery but he's out of danger", Dr Trimurti Nadkarni, chief of neurosurgery, told the BBC.

Doctors already sent the tumor for biopsy and results are expected next week. The 1.87-kilo (four-pound) brain tumour had affected his vision and caused constant headaches."It was a rare operation and the patient has survived".
