G7 foreign ministers gather in Canada

Trump leading on North Korea says envoy to Canada as G7 ministers meet

Group of Seven foreign ministers affirmed Sunday they will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea and pledged to maintain "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang until it rids itself of nuclear weapons, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said.

"Fundamentally, Ukraine is perceived by many and also by Russia as a sort of test range for testing Russian nonconventional warfare - hybrid war", Klimkin said.

Kono said that none of the G-7 members said North Korea's announcement - which critics see as an attempt to win relief from United Nations and other sanctions - would lead to an easing of sanctions on Pyongyang.

"President Trump is really carrying the water on the North Korea issue". Freeland, who speaks Ukrainian, is an avowed critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "It's something we've also been working closely with Canada on".

The U.S. ambassador to Canada said Sunday that President Donald Trump is leading global efforts to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. The meetings are being held with a notable exception - incoming U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has not yet been confirmed, so the U.S. was represented by a deputy, John Sullivan.

The gathering is part of the regularly scheduled run-up ministerial meetings ahead of the G7 leaders' June summit in Charlevoix, Que., but its timing is giving foreign ministers a chance to discuss key developments in the North Korea nuclear standoff.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, center, talks with Elder Garry Sault, Ojibwa Elder of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, left, and Ecuador's Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Fernanda Espinosa during a G7 Outreach session with non-G7 Women Foreign Ministers, in Toronto on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Freeland also noted that Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono had had dinner with the female envoys the night before.

Freeland joked that she and the other ministers are often the only women in meetings, and that Kono had the chance to see a little bit of what it was like.

The envoys were also keen to glean clues from their USA colleague about whether President Donald Trump plans to tear up the Iran nuclear deal and how he will handle a planned summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Freeland will be joined Monday by Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, who will lead his G7 interior minister counterparts in talks on terrorism and cyber security.
