Attack On Journalists Is An Attack on Democracy

Security forces from the Northern Alliance enter Kabul on November 13 2001

The second Kabul bomber dressed like a journalist and detonated himself among the crowd, police said, in what Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called the most lethal single attack on the media since the fall of the Taliban.

In a third attack 11 children were killed and 16 people wounded, including foreign and Afghan security force members, when a suicide attacker exploded his bomb-laden auto near a convoy in the southern province of Kandahar.

A series of attacks occurred in the Afghani capital of Kabul and the southern province of Kandahar on Monday, causing at least 41 people killed and 45 injured, the tally at the United Nations showed.

The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

European Union's Special Representative for Afghanistan Pierre Mayaudon on Tuesday described the attack on journalists in Afghanistan as horrific and said it was an attack on democracy and freedom of speech.

"... targeting journalists goes beyond imagination, these are attacks against which we want to react extremely and strongly and not just convey our condolences to the people of Afghanistan, but ensure them that all should be done for this kind of outrage not to be repeated", said Mayaudon.

The radical militant group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, according to the statement.

Witten would leave the Cowboys as the franchise leader in games played (239), receptions (1,152) and receiving yards (12,448). After an offseason of deliberation about his playing future, it seems that Jason Witten has made his decision.

The BBC said one of its Afghan reporters, Ahmad Shah, was killed the same day in a separate attack in the eastern Khost province.

The attacks came days after the Taliban began a spring offensive, in an apparent rejection of a peace talks overture by the Afghan government.

Another alarm is being sounded about the war in Afghanistan, along with warnings of more attacks to come.

Over the past week, eleven journalists and cameramen have been killed in Afghanistan. And in November past year, broadcaster Shamshad TV was stormed by gunmen who killed one person.

AFP's Marai joined the agency as a driver in 1996, the year the Taliban seized power.

In 2002, he became a full-time photo stringer, rising through the ranks to become the bureau's chief photographer.
