Interview Magazine Shutting Down, Heads for Liquidation

Interview's offices are reported to be closed effective immediately and it is unclear if any issues already in the pipeline will be published.

Former editorial director Fabien Baron sued the magazine for $600,000, alleging both he and his wife were not paid for work undertaken after he was brought on in 2009 to up circulation, which he did. The couple are seeking $600,000 they say is owed in unpaid invoices, according to WWD, which also reports that the magazine's former associate publisher Jane Katz sued Interview past year, claiming that she was sacked without cause and that the publication owes her $230,000 in unpaid wages.

After almost 50 years in business, Interview Magazine, founded by Andy Warhol and the British journalist John Wilcock, folded today (21 May), effective immediately for both its print and web versions.

The publication, which was launched in 1969, has reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which entails the liquidating of assets.

Prior to his departure from the magazine in April, Baron had worked at Interview for 10 years.

In 1977, riffing on his famous dictum that in the future everyone in America would be famous for 15 minutes, Warhol told the late writer and editor Glenn O'Brien that when he was drunk, "I tell everyone they can be on the cover of Interview". He also left the publication in April, two months after an explosive Boston Globe report accused him of acting very inappropriately with three female models.

Brant Publications is owned by billionaire Peter Brant, who is a well-known art lover and Warhol fan.

Former associate publisher Jane Katz, who says she was sacked without cause, also charges the publication owes her $230,000 in unpaid wages, while former Interview President Dan Ragone alleges he is owed $170,000.

That ingenious business concept came to an end with Warhol's death in 1987, though Interview never entirely lost its in-crowd edge.

"Interruptions were allowed and often could take conversations in different directions", she said in a 2004 interview to promote a book about the magazine's early years. In 2016, President Dan Ragone sued the magazine for unpaid wages of $170,000, and former employee Deborah Blasucci said she was sacked from her role as a senior executive for "making too much money".
