North Korea: Trump agreed to 'step-by-step' approach to denuclearization

President Trump walked with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island on Tuesday

CBS News' David Martin reports that Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis "was not surprised".

North Korea says U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his intention during a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to halt joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea.

"It is the case that we are prepared to make security assurances necessary for the North Koreans to engage in that denuclearization", stated Pompeo.

"3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

"Summits were being set up [between USA presidents and] with Kim Jong Un's father Kim Jong Il in 1992, in 1994 and in 2006 and on each occasion they fell through".

But Trump made one thing clear during the summit in Singapore. But, Koreans are anxious they could be affected by the summit discussion.

Speaking in Beijing after Mr Trump and Mr Kim signed a joint statement at the end of their summit in Singapore, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reiterated that China has always abided by all United Nations resolutions on North Korea. "Trump delivered it while getting nothing in return beyond the same generalities that North Korea has been offering since the early 1990s".

As TIME has reported, the US made perhaps the most significant concession at the summit by agreeing to stop joint military exercises with South Korea.

USA forces in Korea said they had not received updated guidance on military exercises. Veterans of Foreign Wars National Commander Keith Harman said that - although these talks were primarily about denuclearization - Korean War vets and their families were hoping this issue would also come up, and it has.

Halep tops Muguruza, eyes first major title
Muguruza came back in the second set as both players shrieked and grunted every time they hit the ball. Like Sharapova, Halep was erratic early, making 30 unforced errors in the first set.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters: "There is great meaning in Chairman Kim's clearly confirming to President Trump the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

The withdrawl of support for LGBTQ rights is one of the ripple of consequences from the Trump-Kim summit.

When asked to clarify Pence's message on whether the joint military exercises would continue, Gardner, who leads a Senate panel overseeing policy toward North Korea, responded: "I think there are certain exercises that will continue, yes".

Although Trump insisted at a post-summit news conference that "I think he really wants to de-nuke", the president was only able to cite a single unwritten pledge from Kim - to close a missile engine facility. "The normal process is not working with North Korea", he said.

President Donald Trump's claim that he wants to end the "war games" that the US carries out with South Korea is highly suspicious.

The KCNA report noted Kim's "proactive peace-loving measures" and the "will of the top leaders of the two countries to put an end to the extreme hostile relations" that date back to the Korean War almost 70 years ago.

Chung Lee, who is owner of Kim's Korean Restaurant in Spokane, moved to the US from South Korea more than 35 years ago.

Although Trump was quick to declare success for the unprecedented summit with Kim Jong Un marked by handshakes and smiles, experts said a joint statement signed in Singapore seemed mostly to rehash old broken promises made by Pyongyang to successive USA administrations.

However, over the past 24 years, normal diplomatic procedures had repeatedly failed to open any effective negotiating door with North Korea, Stoffer recalled.
