Charting the US-China trade battle

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said while Xi's response was encouraging, the Trump administration needs to see "concrete actions from China".

The Trump administration plans to impose 25 percent duties on Friday on $34 billion of Chinese goods in its biggest sanctions yet over complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

As the world's most developed nation and the rule-maker of the current global governing system, there is "astounding absurdity" in the US complaining that it's been bullied in trade, the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, said in a Chinese language commentary on Friday.

Retaliatory measures "took effect immediately", said a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang.

A spokesperson at China's Ministry of Commerce said Friday that while the Asian giant had refused to "fire the first shot", it was being forced to respond after the USA had "launched the largest trade war in economic history".

Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council in Beijing, said: "For companies with supply exposure to tariffs, they will move sourcing country of origin if they can".

Beijing had earlier released a target list of $34bn worth of imported U.S. goods including autos and agricultural products also faced 25 percent tariffs. Friday's tariffs could just be the opening skirmishes in the trade war, as U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to hit $450 billion in Chinese goods, the vast majority of imports. "We have been in trade deficits with almost every country across the globe for years, and the President wants to ensure that that doesn't continue". "As the tariff casualties mount, even many Trump voters are going to ask: When is the master negotiator actually going to negotiate a better trade deal?" "There are lots of things they could do to make life hard for USA businesses operating in China that would be detrimental to us".

Foreign companies accounted for $20 billion, or 59%, of the $34 billion of exports from China that would be subject to new USA tariffs, with United States firms accounting for a significant part of that 59%, Gao said.

Trump has railed against Beijing for intellectual property theft and barriers to entry for U.S. businesses and a $375 billion USA trade deficit with China.

Initially Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to relent with the suggestion that they may lower tariffs on imports of US auto imports to the country.

The group's lobbying efforts have included a social media campaign in which "individual soybean farmers who will be directly affected by the trade conflict attached their photographs to statements appealing directly to the President and his advisors", the group said.

Analysts said this was the quiet before the storm, with United States exports likely to fall off in the third quarter as both sides feel the effects of worsening trade relations.

Top trade representatives from China and the USA have held trade negotiations in recent months.

The US tariffs imposed so far would affect the equivalent of 0.6% of global trade and account for 0.1% of global GDP, according to Morgan Stanley in a research note issued before Mr Trump's comments on Thursday.

Oreshkin said that Russian steel and aluminum makers suffered $537.6 million in damages from the new US tariffs.

Accusing China of conducting "unfair" trade practices, Trump has pledged to protect USA intellectual property, stop noneconomic transfers of industrially significant technology and intellectual property to China, and increase access to the Chinese market for American products. It said they would damage the global economy unless other countries stop them. He said that would rise to a full 4 per cent of the global total if Washington, Beijing and other governments follow through on tariff threats.

"While our 900 member companies continue to suffer from not having a level playing field in China, they are still extremely clear: Increased tensions in the U.S".
