Donald Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to US Supreme Court position

President Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington

The president's announcement came with fanfare in the east room of the White House with Trump's wife, Melania, Vice-President Mike Pence and several senators in attendance.

That's all the support Kavanaugh needs to be confirmed.

Heller is running for reelection in a state Hillary Clinton won.

Sen. Bob Casey is the rare Democrat who opposes some abortion rights and who describes himself as "pro-life", but he opposed Trump's nomination for a reason unrelated to abortion and before he knew it was Kavanaugh. John Thune of South Dakota, the Senate's third-ranking Republican, says. "I believe it vital that the President be able to focus on his never-ending tasks with as few distractions as possible", Kavanaugh wrote.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday rattled off topics Kavanaugh might have to rule on as a Supreme Court justice.

However, given his past experience, and the role of the Federalist Society in vetting the nominees on the short list, I would be surprised to see Judge Kavanaugh's positions change dramatically if he is confirmed. "I do not apply an ideological test to their personal views".

President Donald Trump waited for primetime to unveil his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. "A solid conservative who interprets the law, who won't make the law".

But: Manchin released a statement strongly suggesting that Kavanaugh's opinions on preserving parts of Obamacare will be a deciding factor for the senator.

He said if he's chair of the judiciary committee before the 2020 election, he would not move forward with any Supreme Court nominees, following the tradition set.

More than any other red-state senator, Heitkamp has received a remarkable amount of help from Republicans to keep her job. Trump ended up picking a former clerk of Kennedy's.

Another concern rights groups have is Kavanaugh's stance on criminal prosecutions against sitting presidents.

"I don't concede the point that it's somehow counterproductive to the goal of winning in the midterms to fight like hell to stop Brett Kavanaugh", Fallon said.

Before that, Kavanaugh worked for Bush in the White House and during his election recount with Democratic opponent Al Gore in 2000.

"Kavanaugh has (sided) with the government in instances where the government is limiting access to abortion", Ziegler said of his 2017 dissent.

But: Donnelly has also demonstrated a willingness to vote against Trump on big votes, like the tax bill.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh listens to Sen.

During his speech accepting the nomination, Kavanaugh said his "a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law". Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) in an effort to overcome the GOP's slim Senate majority. She's also said she won't support a nominee who is "hostile" toward Roe v. Wade. According to Kavanaugh, presidents should also be allowed to violate the law if they think the law isn't constitutional. The law never went into effect and has been stalled in lower courts for years. And there is no record of Kavanaugh favoring overturning judicial precedents. That's something that Paul, who has a strong libertarian streak, has been vocal about opposing.

Collins is the likeliest to cross party lines. That opinion is not shocking, it's held by many legal experts, Republican and Democrat, alike.

In a teleconference on Tuesday with reporters, Al Sharpton, a civil rights and activist founder of National Action Network, a group providing community services for the poor, accused the Republican-controlled Senate of "double standards".

Reyes predicted close scrutiny of Kavanaugh's decisions.
