Tour de France: Alaphilippe climbs high to win Stage 10

Tour de France 2018: Groenewegen beats Sagan, Greipel and Gaviria again in thrilling sprint finish

For the second year in a row, the Tour's ninth stage was cursed for Porte.

Among the contenders for the overall win, last year's runner-up Rigoberto Uran lost one minute 28 seconds on his main rivals after crashing about 30km from the finish.

Race radio confirmed the Tasmanian had abandoned the Tour.

He was sitting 10th in this year's race, 57 seconds behind yellow jersey holder Greg van Avermaet of Belgium.

The crash also saw André Greipel needing treatment while Movistar's José Joaquin Rojas has also been forced to abandon the race.

Among the favorites in the overall standings apart from Froome: Alejandro Valverde is fifth (1:31 behind); Rafal Majka sixth (1:32); Jakob Fuglsang seventh (1:33); Adam Yates ninth (1:42); Landa 10th (1:42); Vincenzo Nibali 12th (1:48); Tom Dumoulin 15th (2:03); and Bardet 17th (2:32).

Several big-name riders struggled with the cobbles on stage nine, but John Degenkolb did not as he triumphed in Roubaix. You didn't need to be a rocket scientist to know that this cobbled stage was always going to be Richie's biggest challenge, but he didn't even get a smell of the Pave'.

Degenkolb took the win by holding off Van Avermaet and Quick-Step Floors' Yves Lampaert in a sprint to the line after they had broken off the front of the peloton with 20km to go.

Stocks, oil prices slide on trade war worries
Investors fear that a falling yuan could add to fuel costs and the debt-servicing load of companies with dollar-denominated debts. China's yuan meanwhile dropped 0.45 per cent against the dollar to move back towards an 11-month low plumbed last week.

While the Dutchman followed up Friday's success in Chartres with a Bastille Day victory in Amiens on stage eight, Cavendish could enjoy a respite from questions over his form as there was little he could have done differently this time.

But Van Avermaet, who predicted he would lose the yellow jersey before stages Tuesday and Wednesday, cracked on the second of three major climbs Wednesday.

I honestly believed that if Richie could get through this stage he would be a realistic chance of winning this Tour de France.

"It's a miracle I made it back, it's a miracle I'm still in the Tour de France", a dust covered Bardet said at the finishing line.

BMC Racing's team leader crashed early in the stage, before the race had reached the cobblestones, and immediately grabbed his right collarbone.

And they were only the highest-profile riders to face mishaps in the action-packed cobblestoned Stage 9 of the Tour de France on Sunday.

Although Van Avermaet retains yellow for now, it was in truth a dismal day for BMC.

It's a rest day today on the Tour with the riders then taking on the Alps.
