Carlos Sainz finished 10th on the road but was handed a ten-second time penalty for overtaking behind the Safety Car, promoting Brendon Hartley to score the final point.

"It was just the most confusing second and a half!"

The four-time champion got out of his Ferrari cockpit, and kicked the gravel in utter frustration. He was angry with himself, kicking the gravel in frustration as he stepped out his vehicle.

It mattered little when Hamilton pipped Nico Rosberg, another German rival, in Hockenheim in 2016, as he won the battle but lost the war in a title scrap.

"I threw it away".

Vettel said it was not for want of any effort by the organisers.

"It's not like I will have huge difficulties sleeping tonight because I made a big mistake".

The result means Hamilton now sits 17 points clear of Vettel at the halfway point of the season and the four-time victor credited the elements with helping him secure a vital victory this afternoon. Auto Motor und Sport said one analysis showed that between one race and the next, the increase was nearly 40 horse power.

Hamilton met with stewards for crossing the line between pit entry and the track.

Stewards took into consideration the fact that the incident happened when the safety auto was deployed and at a time of confusion on the pit wall. I just slowed down and trundled over some grass and made sure I joined the track as safe as I could. Since then, Hamilton has been in Iceland, Holland and in London, too, but this week will head to Mercedes' home race in Germany hoping to wipe the slate clean after two disappointing races, and get his championship bid back on track.

Hamilton started 14th on the grid after a catastrophic qualifying on Saturday, but a combination of his skill, speed and tactical acumen enabled him to profit from what seemed to be divine intervention when the heavens opened. I honestly thought I was going to stay out, I was happy with my tyres.

That led to a costly error from Vettel, who crashed into the barriers and out of the race, and when the sister Silver Arrow of Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen both pitted under the resultant Safety Car, Hamilton was in top spot. Mercedes may have been the dominant force in recent years, while Vettel is bidding for a fifth title, but both have failed to capture the imagination of the German public in the same vein that Michael Schumacher managed to.

The majority of the Ferrari-powered cars received their last engine and turbo upgrades around the Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix but all six benefitted from a new MGU-K and energy store in Hockenheim.

Hamilton stayed ahead, after which Mercedes called off the fight, and the expected further rainfall did not arrive until after the chequered flag, deluging the podium ceremony.

"KR: "Do you want me to let him go?"

"Yeah it is a worry but we have seen that they have been capable of doing it". The pair went wheel-to-wheel all the way to Turn 8 but Hamilton emerged ahead before Mercedes strategist James Vowles told Bottas to hold position, a message the Finn accepted.

That did not go down well at a nervy Mercedes.

The pivotal moment in the race came under the safety vehicle prompted by Sebastian Vettel's crash.

"Germans are a bit spoiled when it comes to that, because we've always been successful, we've always been around.but I think ultimately it's the commercial aspects that play the biggest part".

Raikkonen was unable to attack Bottas in the final laps while Verstappen similarly had to settle for fourth, with Red Bull also losing a vehicle as Daniel Ricciardo retired on Lap 28 after reporting a loss of power.

The identity of Vettel's team-mate next season, however, is uncertain with highly-rated rookie Charles Leclerc mooted to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari.

"The Ferrari-Sauber model shows that such alliances can be very important in the future in order to remain competitive", Mercedes team boss Wolff told Le Figaro. "Unless it is possible to clearly know if a technology is legal or not, you have to standardised it". Vettel's win there heaped more misery on the British driver, considering he'd experienced a rare retirement at the Austrian GP one week earlier.
