Iran ambassador: Trump's sanctions violate United Nations security council resolution

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif right greets North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho in Tehran on Tuesday

CNPC is also about to take over Total's stake in the giant Iranian South Pars gas project after the French company chose to leave amid United States sanctions. Before traveling to Iran, Ri held bilateral meetings with several Southeast Asian countries on the sidelines of last week's Asean Regional Forum in Singapore. Even stronger sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector and central bank are to be re-imposed in early November.

On Tuesday, the USA reinstated sanctions targeting the Iranian government's purchase of U.S. dollars, Iran's trade in gold and other precious metals, and its automotive sector.

India has also wanted to invest in the Farzad B gas field.

The US is making history not just by violating a United Nations security council resolution it voted for three years ago, but also by penalising countries who stick to the same unanimous resolution, the Iranian ambassador to the UN has claimed.

The Iranian foreign minister also said the world does not pay attention to "impulsive tweeted diktats" by Trump.

Russia's foreign ministry said it was "deeply disappointed" by the return of sanctions, adding that it would do "everything necessary" to save the 2015 nuclear deal.

The United States is closely monitoring Iranian naval activity to ensure no disruptions occur to global shipping, a top US general said Wednesday, as tensions with Tehran intensify over renewed economic pressure from the Trump administration.

British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson said Tuesday that the current JCPOA was the "best possible" and "achievable" deal to address the West's concerns on Iran, in sharp contrast with Trump's abhorrence of the deal.

Following its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal earlier this year, on Tuesday the U.S. slapped Iran with "the most biting sanctions ever".

Putin Says He's 'Ready' to Go to Washington
Interfax quoted Putin as saying he is ready to visit Washington "if the appropriate conditions are created there". Last week, just days after they met in Helsinki , Trump invited Putin to Washington for a second sit-down .

The European Union has also unveiled a "blocking statute" meant to mitigate the impact of the U.S. sanctions on European firms doing legitimate business with Iran. Hindustan Petroleum, which owns India's third-largest refinery, canceled an Iranian oil shipment in July when its insurance company refused to cover the sale because of impending USA sanctions.

"The US administration performance in these years has led the country to be considered untrustworthy and unreliable around the world which does not meet any of its obligations", Mr Rouhani was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as telling Mr Ri during his visit. But he said the U.S. and allies routinely train for that possibility and are prepared to insure that freedom of navigation and commerce continues in those waters.

"We do not have to adhere to the sanctions imposed on a country by another country".

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned Washington as well, saying that Syria supports Iran in the face of the "aggressive" USA policies.

Rouhani said Iran and North Korea have had common views during many "sensitive global periods" and said Iran will work to improve ties and worldwide cooperation with North Korea.

India had used the rupee-rial arrangement to buy Iranian oil before US sanctions were lifted against Iran in 2016.

'We are pleased to see German businesses stopping their trade with Iran, complying with USA sanctions, and helping pressure the Iranian regime back to the table, ' he tweeted.

Iran's national flags are seen on a square in Tehran February 10, 2012, a day before the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
