Trump Presses Apple to Shift Production to U.S.

Trump signals escalation of trade war with China, says he has tariffs ready on another $267-billion of imports

US President Trump tweeted on Saturday (Sept 8) that Apple should make products inside the United States if it wants to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports.

Trump has already imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, mostly industrial machinery and intermediate electronics parts, including semiconductors.

In its letter this week to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Apple said that "because all tariffs ultimately show up as a tax on USA consumers, they will increase the cost of Apple products that our customers have come to rely on in their daily lives".

While Apple did not offer an estimate of how much Trump's China tariffs would increase costs of production, the company argued that the tariffs will only hurt American consumers and companies, without curbing China's technology policies.

Trump acknowledged in a tweet that "Apple prices may increase because of the massive Tariffs we may be imposing on China", but suggested the issue was not with the tariffs themselves.

In addition, the chip industry is a source of trade surplus for the United States, including with China, Intel argued. Consequently, consumers in the United States will have to pay more for Apple products.

Also on Friday, Tesla disclosed that its chief of accounting, Dave Morton , was leaving the company only weeks after being hired. He said accomplishing things and being useful to others kept him going, as he urged others to spend less time on social media.

Trump said Friday that the timing of the tariffs on the $200bn worth of goods is not yet final. "Start building new plants now".

"It is hard to see how tariffs that hurt US companies and USA consumers will advance the Government's objectives with respect to China's technology policies".

Trump's threatened tariffs, now totalling $517 billion in Chinese goods, would exceed the $505 billion in goods imported from China previous year. But Beijing will struggle to keep responding in kind as it imports less than Dollars 200 billion in U.S. goods per year. "That changes the equation".

But businesses warn there are other ways China can strike back, through regulations and other administrative means, or even through sales of its large holdings of US Treasury debt.

For January-August, China's trade surplus with the United States was $192.64 billion, compared with about $167.94 billion in the same period a year ago. The tariffs would pressure China to stop that behaviour, the administration has said.
