U.S. marking 17th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

Visitors to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville Pa. participate in a sunset memorial service on Monday Sept. 10 2018 as the nation marks the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 2001 attacks

In New York City and throughout the United States, the country is marking the 16th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"17 years ago, Americans went to bed with no thought the next day their world would change forever", tweeted a nearby NYPD precinct.

"A piece of America's heart is buried in this field", Trump said. This memorial is now a message to the world: "America will never, ever submit to tyranny".

President Trump walks with Melania Trump and National Parks and National Parks superintendent Stephen Clark through the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa., on Tuesday.

If not political speeches, some victims' relatives made appeals to patriotism and support for the military and first responders as they read names.

Flight 93 was one of the four planes hijacked on September 11, 2001 in the coordinated terrorist attack on the US that killed almost 3,000 people. Almost a decade later, bin Laden was killed in May 2011 during a US military operation ordered by President Barack Obama.

"This field is now a monument to American defiance", he said.

'Smokey and the Bandit' star Burt Reynolds dead at 82
Reynolds eventually made his debut in 1961's Angel Baby, a pulp thriller about religious zealotry in the American south. The macho star also appeared in Deliverance , which was nominated for three Academy Awards.

He said the site marks the "moment when America fought back", and said the September 11 anniversary recalls the day "a band of fearless patriots turned the tide on our nation's enemies and joined the immortal ranks of American heroes".

"Trump arriving at a 9/11 memorial service this morning". He also tweeted quotes from Fox News about a series of his familiar grievances, including the Russian Federation probe and the U.S. Department of Justice.

A short while earlier in Trump's native NY, at Ground Zero, there was a minute's silence at 8:46 am (1246 GMT), the moment the first of two hijacked airliners struck the World Trade Center.

Trump observed the solemn anniversary for the first time as president a year ago. Organizers of the ground zero ceremony allow politicians to attend, but they've been barred since 2011 from reading names or delivering remarks.

On the day of the attacks, he bragged about having the tallest building in Manhattan after the World Trade Center collapsed, a comment for which Trump still faces backlash.

The president also told stories of Americans aboard the flight who contacted loved ones before their struggle with the hijackers.

Memorials to 9/11 continue to grow at Shanksville, where a newly dedicated Tower of Voices will eventually include a wind chime for each of the 40 people killed there, and ground zero, where work is to begin soon on a pathway honoring rescue and recovery workers. There is no evidence in news archives of mass celebrations there by Muslims. Survivors of the attack were also present, as well as rescuers who worked on the site and dignitaries from the city and around the world.
