The Vikings were so close to defeating the Packers at Lambeau Field, but Daniel Carlson's missed field goal in overtime cost them the game.

Dr. John Tauer, a sports psychologist at the University of St. Thomas says missed field goals have haunted Vikings fans for so many years, it's easy to lose confidence in a kicker like Carlson. "In the end, my hunch is he'll land somewhere".

Asked about what went into the decision to let go of Carlson, the Vikings' head coach responded with his own question.

After a miserable weekend for several National Football League kickers, the Cleveland Browns waived Zane Gonzalez in the wake of their 21-18 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

They didn't immediately announce a replacement for Carlson. Minnesota is replacing the rookie with veteran kicker Dan Bailey, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bailey was released from the Cowboys on September 1. He has also made 276-of-278 extra point attempts, and collected 296 touchbacks on 549 kickoffs.

Bailey was a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 and has a career-long field goal of 56 yards. After his first attempt sailed wide left, Zimmer opted to go for a two-point conversion after scoring early in the second quarter instead of bringing Carlson out to kick the extra point. "That's frustrating. That shorter one I should never miss like that".

"Nah, that's water off a duck's back", Zimmer said.

To make room for Bailey on the active roster, the Vikings released wide receiver Stacy Coley. "We'll get some more sixth-rounders next year, I'm not anxious about that".
