DOJ charges seven Russian officials for hacking doping critics

On Thursday, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador and condemned Russia's "unacceptable" behavior with these attacks.

Earlier Thursday, the Dutch government announced it had disrupted a GRU cyberattack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. At the time, the watchdog was investigating both the poison used to attack ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Britain and chemical weapons which the West says were used in Syria by Russia's ally President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow denied the Bellingcat report, describing the allegation as "bogus".

The rap sheet was lengthened today when it blamed the country for the BadRabbit ransomware attack of October 2017, the hack on anti-doping agency WADA and the hack and leak of documents against the Democratic National Committee during the United States presidential election campaign two years ago.

They said the Russian military intelligence service could have only been conducting operations of such scale on Kremlin orders.

Russian Federation scathingly accused West of "spy mania", while Vladimir Putin has rejected similar charges.

"Basically, the Russians got caught with their equipment, people who were doing it, and they have got to pay the piper".

An official from the Russian embassy escorted them to The Hague, he said. Its old acronym, GRU, is still more widely used.

The GRU, the British report said, was nearly certainly behind the "BadRabbit" ransomware attack a year ago that targeted a Ukrainian global airport and Russian media outlets, as well as the hacking of the World Anti-Doping Agency in Switzerland.

It cites attacks on the World Anti-Doping Agency, Ukrainian transport systems, the 2016 USA presidential race and others as very likely the work of the GRU.

The US indictment says the seven defendants are all Russian citizens and residents.

"We will work tirelessly to find them, stop them, and bring them to justice", he added.

Trump Decries ‘Trauma’ Done To Kavanaugh, Calls For ‘Comprehensive’ Investigation
Flake, a frequent Trump critic, said it was important last week to "hit the brakes" on the Kavanaugh confirmation process. Democrats and Republicans have argued about whether a week is enough time to carry out a thorough investigation.

The Dutch government on Thursday accused Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, of targeting the world's chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, through a cyber operation.

LONDON-The British government has accused Russian military intelligence of being behind four cyber attacks aimed at spreading confusion and disinformation. They are Aleksei Morenets, 41; Evgenii Serebriakov, 37; Ivan Yermakov, 32; Artem Malyshev, 30; Dmitriy Badin, 27.

Officials said it was hard to say what the "full intention" of the agents were, but it was suggested that disrupting the investigation into the chemical weapons attacks in Salisbury and Syria "could well have been their motivation". Four of the attacks were newly attributed on Thursday. The malicious software outbreak briefly knocked out cash machines, gas stations, pharmacies and hospitals and, according to a secret White House assessment recently cited by Wired, dealt $10 billion worth of damage worldwide.

A laptop belonging to one of the four was linked to Brazil, Switzerland and Malaysia - while the activities in Malaysia were related to the investigation into the 2014 shooting down of flight MH17 over Ukraine.

Though less well known than the Soviet Union's once mighty KGB, Russia's military intelligence service played a major role in some of the biggest events of the past century, from the Cuban missile crisis to the annexation of Crimea.

British investigators concluded that the Russian government was behind the attack, and that two GRU operatives had been sent to England to carry out the attempted assassination.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte have released a joint statement condemning the Russian military intelligence unit GRU for a series of alleged global cybercrimes. Britain blames the secretive agency for the March poisoning of Skripal and his daughter.

British authorities believe that two GRU agents were behind the nerve-agent attack in Salisbury, in which they tried to kill former double-agent Sergei Skripal.

Details were released in a co-ordinated release by the United Kingdom and Dutch authorities on Thursday. The suspects are all allegedly members of Unit 74455, a branch of GRU.
