Kim, Pompeo agree to 2nd US-North Korea summit ´at earliest date´

Pompeo said Wednesday that he's optimistic he'll come away with a plan for a second summit between Trump and Kim and progress on a "pathway for denuclearization".

Abe did not speak of differences but highlighted the importance of demonstrating to the world that the U.S. -Japan alliance is "more robust than ever" and stressing the importance of "thorough co-ordination" with Washington on all aspects of North Korea policy. President Moon expressed hope that Pompeo's trip would serve as an opportunity to make "decisive progress" on achieving the goals of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establishing a peace regime.

South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha has given a hint of what a grand bargain between the two countries could look like.

Pompeo and Kim held a two-hour meeting followed by a 90-minute luncheon hosted by Kim. Their meeting comes as President Trump and the North Korean dictator intend on sitting down for another summit to continue work on verifiable denuclearization. -North Korea relations, including a second summit between the two countries' leaders in the near future.

"It's a very nice day that promises a good future for both countries", Kim is quoted as saying, as noted through an interpreter, while sitting for lunch with Pompeo.

Dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang subsequently broke down over a lack of progress, and apparent reluctance on the part of the U.S.to agree to simultaneous measures such as officially ending the Korean War in advance of the North's denuclearization.

An official accompanying the delegation who declined to be named said the trip had gone "better than the last time" but added it is going to be a "long haul". He is expected to leave for China on Tuesday.

Washington said Tuesday that Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang was meant to lay the groundwork for the second U.S.

"Each side has to develop sufficient trust so they can take the actions necessary to get to the end", Pompeo said.

Pompeo will spend less than a day on the ground in Pyongyang, meeting on Sunday with Kim and seeking to flesh out US expectations for his regime to denuclearize.
