McConnell insists Senate will recover from Kavanaugh battle

Fifty senators voted in favour, with 48 against, to appoint 53-year-old Mr Kavanaugh to the court for life.

As exhausted senators prepared for Saturday's vote, some were flanked by security guards.

Not on this somber Saturday. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., in a rear row, looked equally gloomy.

Kavanaugh has strongly denied the allegations. Garland wasn't given a confirmation hearing or Senate vote.

In the Senate chamber, the vote was disrupted on several occasions by angry protests from the gallery.

As the plainclothes officers hustled the protesters out, a few more waves replaced them, until their ranks were depleted.

At a political rally in MS on Tuesday, Trump mocked Ford's account of what she says was a drunken attack on her byKavanaugh when they were teenagers.

During a political rally in MS on Tuesday night, Trump mockingly mimicked Ford, claiming her allegations against Kavanaugh lacked sufficient detail.

Repeatedly during the Senate debate, Republicans accused Democrats of staging a "smear" campaign against Kavanaugh to prevent a conservative becoming a Supreme Court justice. That balanced out the absence without affecting the outcome, and gave Kavanaugh the same two-vote margin he'd have received had both lawmakers voted. But the turmoil surrounding Kavanaugh has transformed the midterms into something bigger than Trump, with implications that could endure long after his presidency.

There are plenty of blue-chip conservative judges from Ivy League and other top law schools who could be confirmed without driving the nation further apart. Trump treated the lone GOP defection as an affront that he quickly predicted would cost Sen. Lisa Murkowski - was a yes. Murkowski was the only Republican to oppose Kavanaugh, voting present on the final roll call.

GE Abruptly Fires CEO John Flannery, Appoints Lawrence Culp as Chief Executive
Immelt remained on as chairman through his retirement at the end of 2017, after which Flannery assumed that role as well. Culp, 55, was president and CEO of Washington, D.C. -based science and tech company Danaher Corp. from 2000 to 2014.

Demonstrators stormed the doors of the Supreme Court building even as he was being sworn in for an appointment that will last for his lifetime.

With Kavanaugh taking the place of the more moderate Anthony Kennedy, conservatives should have a working majority of five justices to restrict abortion rights, limit the use of race in college admissions and rein in federal regulators.

Senate Democrats moved Sunday to rein in talk of impeaching Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, a rallying cry of the progressive left that has drawn interest from some House Democrats.

They also fear he will argue that a sitting president can not be indicted if prosecutors investigating Mr Trump's campaign ties to Russian Federation attempt to pursue him in court. It's also given new definition to the high stakes of November's election.

Michael Bromwich, a lawyer for Ford, said in a tweet that Kavanaugh's confirmation capped, "A week that will live in infamy for the US Senate, permanently diminishing its stature". "The fact that they were willing to use Dr. Ford's story that was uncorroborated to launch character assassinations on Judge Kavanaugh did not sit well with voters".

Soon, voters will get to weigh in on the Kavanaugh confirmation.

"Will he be the man who raged at the Clintons and promised revenge for his ordeal, or the man who impressed Sen".

Asked by reporters aboard Air Force One what message he had for women across the country who feel the nomination sends a message that their allegations of sexual assault are not believed, Trump disagreed with the premise, saying women "were outraged at what happened to Brett Kavanaugh" and "were in many ways stronger than the men in his favor".

Sen. Tammy Duckworth speaks at the Capitol on October 2. She gave an impassioned, lovely speech yesterday.

Said Duckworth, "Some on the other side of the aisle have prioritized partisan tribalism over justice, over truth".
