Khawaja, Paine frustrate Pakistan victory charge

Australia Confirm Three Debutants For First Test Against Pakistan

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas claimed three quick wickets as Australia hobbled their way to 136-3 on the forth day, chasing a mammoth target of 462.

With Australia facing seemingly insurmountable odds to save the first test in Dubai, Khawaja dug in at the crease for eight hours and 44 minutes to score his first century in Asia and help steer Australia to a valiant draw.

Usman Khawaja's extraordinary innings of 141 engineered a remarkable escape for Australia as they held on to draw the first Test against Pakistan.

Pakistan opted to bat after winning the toss against Australia in Dubai.

DUBAI: Hard-working fast bowler Mohammad Abbas took three wickets in seven balls to bring Pakistan closer to victory in the first Test against Australia in Dubai on Wednesday.

Haris Sohail was batting on 15 with night watchman Mohammad Abbas on one at the end of the day's play.

The last time the sides met in the UAE in 2014, Pakistan won 2-0.

Pakistan were only rewarded after lunch when they took the second new ball as soon as it was due and Hafeez trapped Head leg-before with the first ball.

"I didn't play test cricket for over two years, but I always backed myself", Hafeez said, after hitting 15 fours in his 208-ball 10th test hundred that spanned almost 4 1/2 hours.

Part-time leg spinner Marnus Labuschagne finally broke through just before the tea break when he lured Shafiq to drive the ball away from his body and got the thick outside edge to Paine behind the wickets.

Khawaja and Finch had a tricky spell to get through and though both Yasir and Hafeez appealed to have the latter trapped in front, he survived through to stumps.

No team has successfully chased more than the 418-7 West Indies made against Australia in the Antigua Test in 2003.

The visitors had lost all their ten wickets for just 60 runs giving Pakistan a handsome first innings lead of 280 runs.

Jon Holland, who took the key wicket of Azhar Ali for four on Tuesday, dismissed opener Imam-ul-Haq for 48, caught and bowled off a flighted delivery.
