Donald Trump on 'Criminal' Caravan Migrants: 'This Country Doesn't Want Them'

Honduran migrants board trucks sending them back to Honduras after they crossed the border into Guatemala illegally in their bid to reach the US

The reported green light for women and children comes after many migrants were sent back on Saturday, with Guatemalan police transporting at least 62 people in two buses. A handful of migrants jumped into the Suchiate River below to swim for rafts.

Mexican officials have said that those without papers would have to apply for refugee status or turn back.

The Mexican government assured the Trump administration it would secure its borders while prioritizing the human rights and protections for children and pregnant members of a migrant caravan heading north.

"So as of this moment, I thank Mexico", Trump said Friday at an event in Scottsdale, Arizona. As the afternoon drew on, a tropical storm, Vicente, formed nearby off the Pacific coast.

"A lot of people say 'I wonder who started that caravan?'" he said. Some said they hoped to stay in Mexico, but that they had no idea how to get the documents needed to do so.

"I don't know what happened, I thought we were going to cross peacefully and then suddenly there were rocks flying and tear gas".

Presidents Hernandez of Honduras and Jimmy Morales of Guatemala held an emergency meeting Saturday at a Guatemalan.

"Mexico does not and will not allow (people) to enter its territory illegally, let alone violently", he said.

Trump has threatened to halt aid to Honduras and Guatemala, and potentially close the US border with Mexico with the help of the military if the migrants' march is not stopped.

Such a move would cause chaos on the crossing, one of the world's busiest, and badly disrupt trade. "If that doesn't work out, we're calling up the military - not the Guard".

"They're not coming into this country", Trump added.

Central American migrants reach the shore on the Mexican side of the Suchiate River after wading across, on the the border between Guatemala and Mexico, in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018.

Amnesty urges UN investigation, independent autopsy in Jamal Khashoggi death
Trump has called the Saudi announcement a "good first step", but said what happened to Khashoggi was "unacceptable". Since his disappearance, the kingdom had rejected Turkish fears he was killed and dismembered there as "baseless".

President Trump has threatened to call up the U.S. military and shut the border with Mexico to keep out the group.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with his Mexican counterpart, Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, on Friday in an attempt to negotiate a plan on dealing with the large group.

He thanked Mexico for blocking the caravan's progress.

One who made it in was 19-year-old Mario Leon, who abandoned the caravan after a week and crossed Thursday in a raft.

Encamped for two nights using backpacks for pillows and tents made of trash bags on a long bridge between Guatemala and Mexico, the migrant caravan began in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, last week and grew exponentially as it passed through Guatemala.

Mexico is now processing the caravan in small groups, and said some 640 asylum claims have been processed since Friday.

The president has repeatedly claimed that the migrants, and immigrants more broadly, lead to increased crime rates and allow illegal substances to pass over the border, although statistics suggest they do not.

The migrants are generally fleeing poverty and insecurity in Honduras, where powerful street gangs rule their turf with brutal violence.

The spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Chris McGrath, told Fox that his agency "deployed teams to the Mexican border with Guatemala where they are working closely with Mexican officials ... so all individuals can be processed and provided with essential services, including access to health services, food, and shelter". "Change the immigration laws NOW!", he said.

"Because many of those people, a percentage, a fairly big percentage of those people are criminals and they want to come into our country and they're criminals".

Three federal police units are escorting the massive crowd of migrants marching across southernmost Mexico and a police helicopter has been flying overhead. Six police had been injured, Castilla said.
