Saudi Arabia Says Khashoggi Killed in "Fistfight" Amid Mounting U.S. Pressure

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin looks on during a tour of the Boeing Company in St. Louis Missouri

He also said he will talk soon to Prince Mohammed. Saudi Arabia has threatened to retaliate against any punitive action, but analysts say that wielding its main weapon - oil production - could backfire, putting the prince's economic goals even further out of reach.

"We deplore the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. We expect the Saudi government to cooperate fully with Turkish authorities regarding the investigation of this matter", he said.

"They offered me a "temporary pass" that would allow me to return to Saudi Arabia", Alaoudh told AFP. "I knew it was a trap and just left with my expired passport". "Nobody has told me he is not responsible", the USA leader said. According to the New York Times, some members of the group had ties to the Saudi crown prince.

Madani, a decade older than the other members of the 15-man team, exited the consulate building by the back door along with an alleged accomplice.

"We can not close this file until the crown prince is brought to account and removed from his post".

For two weeks, Saudi authorities had said Khashoggi, who moved to the United States previous year for fear of being caught up in the wave of arrests sweeping the kingdom, had left the building. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government has so far refused to publicly share that evidence, possibly to protect Turkish surveillance methods but also, analysts said, to preserve a measure of leverage over the Saudis and the Trump administration, which has tried to protect its Saudi allies.

"I hope those responsible for Khashoggi's killing are punished and no one ever thinks of repeating this".

Yeni Safak cited no source for the information. Other members of Khashoggi's family, including his ex-wife and daughter, are now in Dubai, add the sources.

After weeks of denying any knowledge of Khashoggi's whereabouts, the Saudi government admitted on Friday that he had died in the diplomatic compound.

"This is a very complicated murder", Celik added, warning that Ankara would not be drawn into speculation. That account is dramatically different from that given by Turkish officials, who said privately that a Saudi hit team flew in to kill and then dismember him.

Human rights activists and friends of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi hold his pictures during a protest outside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on Oct 8, 2018.

The journalist went missing on October 2 after cameras captured him walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency announced the calls to Khashoggi's son, Salah, early Monday morning.

By nightfall, Turkish police began searching an underground vehicle parking garage in Istanbul's Sultangazi district. He was visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul at the beginning of October for documents needed for his upcoming marriage.

That permission, however, was not given to Turkish authorities by the Saudi consulate and they were not able to search the Saudi diplomatic auto on Monday, said private broadcaster NTV.

The footage was handed to CNN news channel by Turkish authorities.

Some Turkish employees reportedly said they were instructed not to go to work around the time that Khashoggi disappeared.

Indonesia's president is "deeply concerned" about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and wants a transparent investigation. "They took your bodily presence from my world", she wrote. The Saudi foreign ministry tweeted out a photo of the two men meeting, and U.S. Treasury spokesman Tony Sayegh said in a separate tweet that Mnuchin raised the Kashoggi investigation in his discussions with the crown prince.
