Trump Adviser Tells Putin: We'll Quit Arms Control Treaty You're Breaking

Trump is planting the seeds for a new age of nuclear terror

Bolton responded that Trump would look forward to seeing Putin in Paris on the sideline of events marking 100 years since Armistice Day, which is November 11.

"It is the American position that Russian Federation is in violation", Bolton said at Interfax, the same press agency where he discussed U.S. plans to withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missiles treaty in 2001.

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, spent two days in Moscow this week to discuss the move with Putin and his top lieutenants.

He mentioned possibly meeting Trump in Paris next month.

Washington Post: "How China plays into Trump's decision to pull out of INF treaty with Russia" - "When President Trump announced Saturday that the United States would be pulling out of a landmark nuclear-arms agreement with Russia, he blamed Moscow for the decision".

Joking about the eagle on the Great Seal of the United States, Mr. Putin noted the olive laurel of peace and the collection of arrows for war the eagle clutches in its talons. Putin asked with a laugh.

Germany's foreign minister has told his US counterpart that a 1987 nuclear weapons treaty the Trump administration wants to abandon touches on core European interests.

Another official said the US-Russia tension was nothing new.

The goal of preventing nuclear strikes in Europe is a worthy one, but Trump's claims that Russian Federation has repeatedly violated the terms of the INF Treaty are correct.

As he spoke, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with Channel One television that the Kremlin is drafting a resolution to present to the UN General Assembly for a symbolic vote on preserving the 1987 treaty spurned by Trump.

The treaty forbids Russian Federation and the U.S.to have, produce or test ground-launched medium-range missiles with a range of between 300-3,400 miles.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said Monday at a news conference in Tokyo that the United States' withdrawal from the treaty would be "undesirable", adding, "We hope that it will be averted".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that the Western military alliance's members blame Russian Federation for developing a new missile in violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, but he doesn't expect them to beef up nuclear arsenals in Europe in response.

While rejecting the U.S. president's claim that Russian Federation breached the INF treaty, Putin said that the USA missile defense facilities in Romania hold "intermediate-range cruise missiles with just a tweak in computer software".

Putin said he feared the world might be about to slip into an arms race, saying the fate of another U.S.

An end to the INF Treaty could see the U.S. deploying weapons to its allies in Asia to contain Chinese influence.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters on Tuesday that right now "there are no prospects for a new deal" to replace the INF and that it is a "dangerous position" to give up the INF treaty without an alternative in sight.

"The Kremlin denied any such violation and suggested that it was Washington - and not Moscow - that had failed to comply with the pact".

Afterwards, Mr Trump's Democratic Party opponents, and some members of his own Republican Party, accused him of failing to stand up to Mr Putin, especially over allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 USA presidential elections. While considered a critical step in diffusing the Cold War at the time of its signing, Russian Federation has been violating it since at least 2014.

Christmas shopping was in full tilt the day Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sat down at the White House alongside Ronald Reagan to sign what seemed a harbinger of the end of the Cold War: the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

He also called the meddling "a major obstacle" to achieving agreement on issues where the two countries have a shared interest.

National Security adviser John Bolton held high-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, directly confronting Moscow's anger over US plans to withdraw from a landmark arms control treaty in place since the Cold War.

National Security Adviser John Bolton confirmed the plan Tuesday in Moscow, not long after speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin in person about the decision.

"I am confident that even small steps will benefit our relations and will help rebuild trust", the defense minister said, according to the Interfax news agency.
