Canada 'deeply concerned' after China detains former diplomat

According to the Post, lawyers proposed an extensive security plan that Meng was willing to pay for if she were released on bail. By agreeing to act as "sureties", the five people commit to ensuring she doesn't flee and abides by other bail terms.

Australia, New Zealand and the United States have long regarded Huawei with suspicion because, although independent, it is susceptible to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party.

Trump told Reuters on Tuesday that he could intervene in the ongoing case of Chinese Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who was detained on December 1 in Vancouver, if it would help him make a trade deal with Beijing.

As Australia tries to strike a balance in relations between the U.S., our key strategic ally, and China, our biggest economic partner, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has argued that Australia can keep on side with both superpowers.

Though the timing appears to be a coincidence - the warrant for her arrest was dated August 22 - China sees the case as a bid to secure leverage in the ongoing U.S.

US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters in Washington "the charges against Meng pertain to alleged lies to United States financial institutions" about Huawei's business dealings in Iran.

Canada's CTV network reported the Canadian Government was considering issuing a similar warning. Reuters was not able to confirm the report.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials claim they have no information on the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig who has been detained in China.

But President Donald Trump undercut efforts to distinguish between trade talks and the Huawei case.

Chief of staff favorite says no
Meadows' communication's director, Ben Williamson, confirmed the statement in a tweet . "He has not been campaigning for the job". Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity told The Hill that Trump and Meadows talk nearly every day on a range of topics.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale confirmed that former diplomat Michael Kovrig had been detained. "If they want to send you a message they will send you a message".

Those bans were provocative enough but Canadian police have just arrested Ms Meng, a rising star on Huawei's board, after receiving an order to deport her to the USA over charges that have more than a whiff of geopolitics.

"We will continue to follow the bail hearing on Monday".

Her arrest has infuriated China, calling it "extremely bad".

Her family assured the court she would remain in Vancouver at one of her family houses in an affluent neighborhood.

"If they are not registered and their workers are in China undertaking activities, then that's already outside of, and breaking, the law, revised just past year, on the management of overseas non-governmental organisations operating in China", Lu said.

Her bail is in the tune of $10 million, $7 million of which must be in cash. She was ordered to reappear in court on February 6.

Huawei is the world's largest supplier of telecommunications network equipment and second-biggest maker of smartphones, with revenue of about $92 billion a year ago.

Because Kovrig's group is not registered as a non-governmental organization in China, "once its staff become engaged in activities in China, it has already violated the law", Lu said.

US authorities allege that Meng committed fraud when she told an HSBC executive that Huawei and SkyCom were two separate entities. The researcher is confident that Huawei is only the most recent name in the target list and that other Chinese firms would eventually also be targeted.
