British PM Theresa May survives vote of confidence

Mrs May has made a statement responding to the development outside the door of 10 Downing Street this morning, saying she is determined to "finish the job".

The vote will be held tonight, with the result expected at around 9pm.

"The Prime Minister's half-baked Brexit deal does not have the backing of her Cabinet, her party, Parliament or the country".

May will need the support of more than 50% of the 315 Conservative MPs to stay in office, at least 158.

But it is a secret ballot so the final outcome is hard to predict.

The victory means not only that May holds onto power, but also that now she can not be formally challenged by her own party for a year.

May has not said what she will do if, as many expect, there is an early election triggered by Britain's Brexit crisis.

"Weeks spent tearing ourselves apart would only create more division, just when we should be standing together to serve our country".

She added: "None of that would be in the national interest".

The Conservatives had to build a "country that works for everyone" and deliver "the Brexit people voted for".

From there, people who have been members of the Conservative Party for more than three months receive a postal vote to choose a leader out of the two.

"The Conservative Party, part of it's strength is it's always been a broad church but the Prime Minister is the Prime Minister and deserves all our support".

Prior to that he was the country's longest-serving Health Secretary, a position he held for six years and which made him unpopular with medical staff staging their first all-out strike in the National Health Services' history.

But he said the DUP would not support a no-confidence motion in Parliament at this stage.

China has demanded that Canada release the arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou or face consequences. She was arrested while changing planes in Vancouver and is facing extradition to the United States.

She could, for example, threaten her rebels that without their backing she would have to lean towards a softer Brexit- something that could gain support from opposition MPs.

Although being in the single market would require maintaining freedom of movement of European Union citizens into Britain - a contentious issue for pro-Brexit voters - this approach is considered more likely to command a majority in parliament and potentially pass a vote. Delivering a deal was never going to be simple. They say warnings of economic doom are exaggerated.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted Wednesday evening that the result of the no-confidence vote "changes nothing".

Many Conservative MPs and May's Northern Irish allies in the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) fear a plan for a temporary customs arrangement with the European Union will become permanent, with no way out. Some MPs have already insisted that this doesn't mean they will fall into line.

Under party rules, only 48 Tory MPs, or 15 per cent of the caucus, were needed to trigger the non-confidence vote. But our party will rightly not tolerate it.

I realise that the party would like a different leader to take them into that election. If she honours her word she will decide in the interests of the party and the nation that she'll go. But she's still got a mountain to climb.

Anger has focused on the so-called "backstop" to prevent the return of a physical border in Northern Ireland.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said the odds favoured Mrs May from the beginning of the day, and did nothing but improve as the night's vote neared.

There will be a leadership contest to decide her replacement.

Who are the frontrunners to lead the party if she loses?

Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Sajid Javid are also considered top contenders.

Several past members of May's government - including former foreign minister Boris Johnson - have had their eyes on the premiership post.

Still, he remains very popular with the party's membership: people queued for hours to see his speech at the Conservative Party Conference in October, which was widely seen as a pitch to replace May.

But she could still lose and Labour might still challenge the government with a vote of no confidence to try to force a general election.
