May confirms Brexit vote postponed

Pound tumbles after May aborts Brexit vote

May's move on the eve of the scheduled parliamentary vote opens up an array of possible outcomes, ranging from a disorderly Brexit with no deal to another referendum on European Union membership.

The move thrusts Britain's exit from the European Union into turmoil, with possible options including a disorderly no-deal Brexit, another referendum on EU membership, or a last minute renegotiation of Mrs May's deal with Brussels.

In the Parliament in May had announced that she was going to present their EU-colleagues, the "significant concerns" of the British house of Commons, and "further assurances" from Brussels to demand.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel had a stark message for Theresa May on Tuesday: The Brexit deal can not be renegotiated.

In light of Mrs May's decision to pull the vote and a growing possibility of a "no-deal" Brexit, Ireland's Foreign Minister, Simon Coveney, said the UK's close neighbour would ramp up its plans for a no-deal Brexit.

The agreement faced criticism both from the opposition and the ruling party, with several members of May's cabinet resigning over disagreements with the deal.

European Council President Donald Tusk called an extraordinary urgent meeting of EU leaders to discuss recent events in the context of Brexit.

"The backstop is a necessary guarantee for the people of Northern Ireland", May said, adding that whatever relationship the United Kingdom wants with Europe "there will be a backstop in it".

But opposition against her Brexit deal is hardening, and sources from the Conservatives and Democratic Unionist Party, have warned that nothing short of a ditching of the backstop and guarantee of a future trade deal will be enough for it to pass.

However, he offered a glimpse of hope to May by saying there was room to give "further clarifications and further interpretations without opening the Withdrawal Agreement".

The vote barely passed, 206-203, with only five Democrats voting for and 17 Republicans voting against. Still, the bill has faced criticism, including from conservative Republicans.

Summing up May's meeting with Merkel, the prime minister's official spokesman said: 'The Prime Minister set out the view of parliament that the backstop must only be temporary.

Speaking after her meeting with Merkel, May appeared to acknowledge there was no chance of reopening negotiations on the Irish backstop, the part of the deal created to avoid the return of border infrastructure between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Instead of holding the vote she looked sure to be defeated on, Mrs May has travelled to key European capitals to try and win concessions on the controversial backstop proposal that could win around rebel Tory MPs.

Mr Juncker told MEPs the agreement was the "best deal possible" and the "only deal possible".

'Everyone has to know that reopening the withdrawal agreement will not happen, ' he added.

May didn't say what the solution might be, noting that "we are just at the start of the negotiations and the start of the discussions".

"I still believe there is a majority to be won in this House in support of it if I can secure additional reassurance on the question of the backstop", she told MPs.

"It is clear that while there is broad support for numerous key aspects of the deal, on one issue - the Northern Ireland backstop - there remains widespread and deep concern", May said.

Elsewhere, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour party of stalling on supporting either a confidence motion in May's leadership or a second referendum.
