UK PM to warn against 'damage' of second Brexit vote

Prime Minister Theresa May

MPs TO VOTE ON OPINIONS?

Yet even as part of the EU, Britain has been the premier global ally of the United States, controversially joining the invasion of Iraq despite widespread European opposition.

In a series of high profile interventions into the Brexit debate Mr Blair has insisted that a majority of MPs may decide a second referendum is the only way out of parliamentary gridlock on European Union withdrawal. "I will not let the British people down".

"Another vote. would do irreparable damage to the integrity of our politics, because it would say to millions who trusted in democracy that our democracy does not deliver". "So we're not going to accept the result of your vote". It "would further divide our country at the very moment we should be working to unite it".

The indicative votes would be non-binding and give MPs from all parties a say on a range of options, from...

Dr Fox, the International Trade Secretary, believes that the move would help to bolster the chances of Mrs May's deal being agreed by Parliament by ruling out alternatives such as a Norway or Canada-style Brexit.

"Businesses expect MPs to take responsibility rather than just be critics", he told Radio 4's Today.

Trump's enthusiasm for Brexit stands in marked contrast to the views of his predecessor Barack Obama, who had warned that Britain would be at the "back of the queue" for a U.S. trade deal if it left the European Union.

The newspaper's Sunday edition has reported that Gavin Barwell, Mrs May's chief of staff, has drawn up secret plans for a second vote while David Lidington, the Minister for Cabinet Office, is believed to have held meetings with opposition Labour MPs - causing a rift in the Cabinet with Brexit-supporting MPs.

'We need you!' - Klopp's pre-Napoli rallying call
Even in what has so far been a season of serene progress in the Premier League, their position in the Champions League is precarious.

MPs were due to vote on Mrs May's Brexit deal last Tuesday, but it was postponed when the prime minister admitted it would have been "rejected by a significant margin".

"We're actually becoming more divided on this subject than perhaps we were two-and-a-half years ago and that's why I think a second referendum gets closer", Farage told BBC TV.

"Any effort to force Brexit over the line without checking that it has the continued consent of the British people will only reinforce divisions".

Mr Howard lashed out at the possibility of a People's Vote, declaring it would "discredit" democracy and "display contempt" to the British public who voted to leave the EU.

She had been seeking legal assurances over the controversial "backstop" plan to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, if no trade deal is reached.

But EU leaders were firm in their assessment that the deal was done and the agreement would not be reopened.

In response, the leaders of the remaining EU countries issued a bare-bones statement reiterating that the backstop was intended never to come into effect, that if it were activated it would "apply temporarily", and that "the Union would use its best endeavours to negotiate and conclude expeditiously a subsequent agreement that would replace the backstop".

Mr Barwell is said to have approached pensions secretary Amber Rudd, Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, business secretary Greg Clarke, justice secretary David Gauke, and Mr Lidington, whose role as Minister for Cabinet office is considered the defacto deputy prime minister, after Mrs May cancelled the vote on the Withdrawal Agreement last Monday in face of certain defeat and after fruitless renegotiations with Brussels bureaucrats during the latter end of last week.
