Bob Neill Insists Majority Of Conservatives Back Theresa May's Brexit Deal

Theresa May speaks outside 10 Downing Street after a confidence vote by Conservative Party members of parliament in London Britain

The Prime Minister was forced to postpone a vote on her plans in December after it became clear the deal would be rejected by MPs.

May confirmed that debate would start next week on a "meaningful vote" to take place in the House of Commons around January 14 and 15.

Mrs May on Monday said she was still working to get concessions that would appease rebellious MPs. "So far, nobody has put forward an alternative on all those issues", she said. "I don't see how the deal passes at the moment. the interesting thing will be how much it loses by at the first attempt", Anand Menon, a professor of European politics and foreign affairs at King's College London, told Al Jazeera.

Those three areas include specific measures for Northern Ireland, a greater role for parliament in negotiations on the next stage of future U.K. -EU relations, and further assurances from the European Union to address concerns over the Irish backstop.

"There will be new customs requirements that could cause particular challenges for roll-on-roll-off ferry ports which handle tens of thousands of [trucks] travelling between the UK and the European Union each day", Maritime UK's David Dingle said early a year ago.

He added: "The priority now is to await events, monitor what is happening (with) the ratification procedure on the United Kingdom side and no, there will not be any meeting between the Commission and our negotiator teams".

Many Conservative MPs continue to believe the deal does not represent the Brexit the country voted for, and some are actively calling for Britain to leave with no deal.

"Failing that, we should approach the challenge of leaving on WTO terms in a way that is realistic and sensible, but also with the optimism and self-confidence displayed by the majority of the British public".

The prime minister's deal is facing opposition from many of her own MPs, as well as Labour and other opposition parties including the Remain-supporting Liberal Democrats.

Pogba leads resurgent Man United to win over Bournemouth
Manchester United ended the year on a high, as they beat Bournemouth 4-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. His two goals aside, his movement and passing repeatedly caused Bournemouth problems.

Conservative MP Dame Caroline Spelman, who helped organise the letter alongside Labour MP Jack Dromey, said a no-deal Brexit would hit the economy and cause job losses.

Mrs May has intensified efforts to win over her Brexit critics and seek fresh guarantees from Brussels ahead of next week's crunch vote on her deal.

"Everyone recognises that Brexit is an existential threat to the United Kingdom automotive industry and we hope a practical solution will prevail", he said, calling for lawmakers to back May's deal to guarantee a transition period.

Brexit related bills now before Parliament - the Trade Bill, the Agriculture Bill, the Healthcare Bill, the Fisheries Bill, the Immigration Bill and the Financial Services Bill.

Mrs James told the BBC's Politics Live that she expected MPs to "coalesce" around the PM's Brexit deal "or something very similar", saying: "This country can not afford to leave the European Union with no deal".

Sir Vince Cable said: 'The time has now come for MPs to assert their authority by making it impossible for the government to collect crucial taxes if they do pursue a damaging no deal'.

"But I think that it's very unlikely Parliament will actually stare down the barrel of that particular gun". "We don't know what the numbers are", he told BBC.

Dozens of trucks descended on an abandoned airfield in southeast England on Monday in an exercise for easing congestion in Channel crossings in case of a no-deal Brexit.
