Norwegian millionaire's wife likely abducted, ransom demanded

10 million in Monero demanded by kidnappers as ransom in Norway

"There have been both ransom demands and serious threats", Tommy Brøske, the police inspector leading the investigation, said at a press conference in Oslo on Wednesday morning.

The estimated value of the family is estimated to be around $199 million, and are listed as the 172nd richest family in the country by Norway's financial Magazine, Kapital.

Police said the case was given a "low profile" because of the threats but went public in an effort to garner information on her whereabouts, BBC News reported.

Police said a note found in the couple's house, east of Oslo, described what would happen to her if the demanded ransom was not paid.

Anne-Elisabeth Hagen, 68, the wife of real estate investor Tom Hagen, went missing on October 31, but news of her disappearance had not previously been disclosed and police said they could not confirm whether she was still alive.

Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen, the wife of the Norwegian billionaire Tom Hagen.

Norwegian tabloid Verdens Gang, quoting unnamed sources, reported that a demand for ransom corresponding to 9 million euros (US $10 million) had been made, payable in the Monero cryptocurrency.

The kidnappers have threatened to use violence against her if her family does not meet their demands, Norway's newspaper of reference Aftenposten said, adding that there had been limited contact with the suspects.

Tottenham rewarded for relying on exhausted stars in routine win at Cardiff
Spurs have won their last five Premier League games on New Year's Day to suggest a return to winning ways is likely. Spurs beat Cardiff 3-0 on Tuesday evening to regain some traction after their disappointing home loss to Wolves.

Mr Broeske said "those behind have chosen to communicate digitally and we have had no other type of contact".

Family lawyer, Svein Holden, told reporters: 'The family sees this as a cruel and inhumane act.

There is no evidence Mrs Falkevik Hagen has been harmed since she disappeared, but officers have also not received any "proof of life", police said.

The kidnappers are demanding $10 million dollars in exchange for Haden's release, which they want paid in the cryptocurrency monero.

Police believe she disappeared from the couple's home, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the Swedish border.

Many Norwegian media outlets knew of Mrs Falkevik Hagen's disappearance but did not publish any details after the police warned against publicising the kidnap over fears the attackers would harm the victim.

The police statement said the main hypothesis "has always been that the woman was abducted against her will" and that "extensive" forensic work has been carried out at the home.
