European Union preparing to delay Brexit until at least July

The British flag is seen at half mast

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn gave his clearest indication yet that his party is ready to call a no-confidence ballot within days of Theresa May losing a United Kingdom parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal.

"The country does have a right to know what members of parliament are for, not just what they are against, and it's important that the house comes to a view as to what it can back", Barclay said.

He used an article in the Sunday Telegraph to urge MPs to vote down May's "bad" deal to send a message to Brussels that the United Kingdom "will not be bullied".

London mayor Sadiq Khan suggested May should step down and call a general election if she loses next week's vote.

In a warning to Conservative rebels ahead of the vote, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said that Brexiteers seeking "ideological purity" are in danger of seeing Britain not leave the European Union at all.

While Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay said there had been "some movement" from MPs to support the agreement which is widely expected to be defeated, he said he thought that if it fell the Commons would eventually support something "along the lines of this deal".

Corbyn confirmed that he would not consider supporting the government in the meaningful vote on Tuesday, despite Theresa May's last-ditch attempts to garner support for her deal from members on the opposition benches.

Theresa May told lawmakers they should not let down Brexit-backers.

During a Christmas visit to troops in Iraq, Trump said he would deny any request from the military to extend the mission in Syria. He told reporters there was no timetable for a U.S. withdrawal from Syria but that there was not an unlimited commitment.

The Sunday Times reported that some lawmakers are planning to seize control of the legislative agenda from the government in an act that would allow Parliament to extend the Brexit deadline or even overturn the decision to leave the EU.

Danielle Haralambous, a United Kingdom analyst at the EIU, said: "Time is simply running out, and we're at a stage where Brexit can probably only happen in late March now in the unlikely event that parliament approves Mrs May's deal on 15 January, or if parliament supports leaving without a deal".

If a confidence vote failed, he'd be under pressure to back a second Brexit referendum, risking a backlash from the many Labour supporters who voted to leave the EU.

- The Prime Minister faced calls from a predecessor, Sir John Major, to revoke Article 50 to halt Brexit - as he warned it would be "morally reprehensible" to crash out without a deal.

More than 100 MEPs from 26 European Union member states have also signed a letter calling on the United Kingdom to "reconsider" the Brexit decision, saying the its departure will "weaken all of us".

The vote had been scheduled to take place in December but was called off at the last minute by the prime minister, who was facing nearly certain defeat.

"I would love a general election because that would allow us to give a very clear statement to the Tory government as to where we're standing", he said.
