Prince Philip visits hospital after vehicle crash

Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Phillip has been involved in a auto crash near Sandringham Estate, in an incident leaving the 97-year-old Duke shaken but uninjured.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a road traffic accident close to the Sandringham Estate but was not injured, Buckingham Palace said. "Local police attended the scene", it added.

Mr Warne said: 'I was driving home and I saw a vehicle - a black Land Rover - come out from the side road on the right and there was a huge collision with another auto'.

Safety campaigners have renewed calls for eyesight and medical tests for elderly drivers after the Duke of Edinburgh's auto crash - although motoring organisations said young male drivers pose more risk than older ones.

Witness Roy Warne told the BBC Radio 4 on Friday that he saw the prince's SUV "careening, tumbling across the road and ending up on the other side". He was very shaken and he went and asked: 'Is everyone else alright?' He's a very fearless man.

"There will be some surprise that the duke still drives himself on public roads", BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond wrote in a commentary.

Prince Philip skipped out on church services, during which a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace assured anxious fans that he is in good health and was spending the day relaxing with family.

The royal, who has been staying at Sandringham since Christmas, is now said to be back at the estate and has seen a doctor as a precaution. Norfolk County Council will discuss reducing the speed limit on the road from 60 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour and installing safety cameras.

This may raise concerns about security but the duke was being shadowed by another vehicle, thought to contain police officers, just before his crash, Mr Warne has suggested.

Both drivers involved in the collision were breathalysed, as is force policy, and both provided negative readings, Norfolk Police said.

Mr Warne, who was one of the first motorists on the scene, told The Sun newspaper he overheard Philip telling police he had been "dazzled by the sun".

Two people in the other auto were injured and taken to the hospital.

Though Thursday's crash has triggered a debate in Britain about old age drivers, Edmund King, president of The AA motoring association, said new drivers were more prone to accidents.

The Palace confirmed that Philip wasn't injured in the collision.

When motorists reach the age of 70 in Britain they are required to renew their licence, and must do so every three years thereafter. "It was a horrendous accident and it's just wonderful that people weren't seriously injured".

A doctor examined Prince Philip at Sandringham, where he was given the all clear.

Philip, known for his forthright manner and off-colour jokes, retired from public life in 2017 and underwent a hip replacement operation last April.
