Trump plan to end shutdown panned by opponents, right

Border Wall

In a bid to break the shutdown impasse and fund his long-promised border wall, President Donald Trump on Saturday offered to extend temporary protection for young people brought to the USA illegally as children.

On Saturday, the president offered to "extend temporary protections for young people brought to the US illegally and for those who fled disaster zones", in exchange for $5.7 billion to fund a border wall between the USA and Mexico, the Associated Press reported. They want Trump to reopen the government before negotiations proceed, and note that it is the president himself who tried to take away those protections in the first place.

The proposal would also extend temporary protections for some young people brought to the US illegally as children and immigrants who fled disaster zones.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Trump's proposal was not a "good faith" offer.

Conservative radio host Ann Coulter and other immigration hard-liners slammed the Saturday proposal as "amnesty" for immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children as well as for refugees from several countries.

Trump has offered to extend temporary protections for young people brought to the USA illegally and for those who fled disaster zones.

Vice President Mike Pence, in a Fox News Sunday interview, said, "This is not amnesty".

"We can pass a continuing resolution for 30 days, get the government open, get people back to work, and then let's sit around the table and see where the common ground is", Mr. Clyburn said.

The New York Democrat said there is only "one way out" of the shutdown.

Earlier, Pelosi said Trump's proposals were "a non-starter".

The Dreamers are protected from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme.

At the Border, Trump Moves Closer to Emergency Declaration
Visiting a border patrol station in McAllen, Trump viewed tables piled with weapons and narcotics. It was not clear what a potential compromise between the White House and Congress might entail.

Pelosi and other Democrats call for Trump to delay his scheduled State of the Union address until after the government shutdown.

The impacts of the record-breaking partial government shutdown are continuing to escalate. McConnell has not brought them to the floor of the Senate, deferring instead to the need for negotiations between Trump and Democrats.

His comment drew immediate pushback from some Democrats, including Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., who said in a tweet that Trump "is no MLK" and that the vice president owes an apology to the country and King's memory. McConnell has said he plans to take legislative action and put the proposal before the Senate. "I realized that things I had said were wrong".

BuzzFeed's top editor Ben Smith responded to Carr's statement by saying, "We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he's disputing". Democrats also want Trump to reopen government before talks can start.

As tensions over the border wall and the government shutdown continued unabated last week, Pelosi demanded that Trump postpone his scheduled January 29 State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress until after the government is reopened, submit it in writing to Congress or make the speech at the White House.

"Let's go back and forth on this and see where we can find common ground", he said.

According to the White House, Trump's latest proposal would call for $5.7 billion to "fund a steel barrier system, including embedded investments in technology and roads, on our southern border in the priority areas cited by Border Patrol".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also panned the proposal as "more hostage taking", saying that it was Trump who had "single-handedly" imperiled the future of the immigrants he proposed to help. "Walls are not immoral, in fact it is the opposite of immoral", Mr. Trump said.

Some 800,000 government employees have not seen paychecks or have been furloughed for nearly a month now with the shutdown hitting its 29th day.

The Democrats insist they will not negotiate until government is reopened.

She and other Democrats oppose the wall, calling it too expensive, ineffective and immoral. DACA and TPS were programs previously targeted by the Trump administration, despite bipartisan criticism.
