Russian Federation follows United States in suspending nuclear treaty

U.S. Plans to Withdraw From Nuclear Arms Treaty With Russia Source SaysMore

President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said Russian Federation was suspending its participation in a key Cold War-era missile treaty in a mirror response to a United States move the day before.

The United States withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on Friday, accusing Russian Federation of violating it.

However, Mr Putin said Moscow will only deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles if Washington does so.

Signed towards the end of the Cold War by then United States president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the treaty bans ground-launched missiles with a range of between 500 and 5,500 kilometres.

Russian Federation would only deploy intermediate- and short-range missiles in Europe or elsewhere in answer to similar moves from the USA, he added.

Such weapons were seen as particularly destabilising as they only take a few minutes to reach their targets, leaving no time for decision-makers and raising the likelihood of a global nuclear conflict over a false launch warning.

"We will respond quid pro quo", Putin said.

Ex-Trump lawyer Cohen delaying testimony to Congress
Davis said "family is out of bounds", adding that Congress should censure Trump for his comments and investigate Giuliani. Trump alleged that Cohen lied to Mueller and demanded that his former fixer "serve a full and complete sentence".

On Friday, US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said that Washington would suspend its liabilities under the INF Treaty starting February 2 and would quit it within six months if Russian Federation fails to comply with its demands. "Our American partners have announced they were suspending their participation in the treaty, and we will do the same".

The foreign minister said Russian Federation had "tried everything to save the treaty" in several rounds of diplomatic talks. "The US' unilateral withdrawal from the Treaty may have a whole number of implications, China will closely monitor the developments", the diplomat noted.

He claimed that the U.S. itself had violated the treaty by deploying missile interceptors in Romania that use the launchers that could hold land-based cruise missiles.

"Let's wait until our partners are mature enough to conduct an equal and substantive dialogue on those issues", he said.

Trump said he would like to "get everybody in a big and handsome room and do a new treaty", but in the meantime, the United States "can't be put at a disadvantage".

Sergey Lavrov was speaking during a meeting with President Putin.

"They are deploying more and more of the new nuclear-capable missiles in Europe", he said.
