Three UK Conservative politicians defect to new independent group

Seven British MPs Quit Labor Party Over Brexit, Anti-Semitism

Three pro-European lawmakers have quit Britain's governing Conservatives to join a newly-formed centrist group of independent legislators opposed to the government's conduct of Brexit.

The trio, who have been outspoken in their opposition of Brexit, cited the Government's approach to leaving the European Union as one of the key reasons for their decision to leave the party.

"We no longer feel we can remain in the party of a government whose policies and priorities are so firmly in the grip of the ERG and DUP", they said in a statement.

He said there were "clearly a lot of Labour MPs wrestling with their conscience, and Conservatives who are demoralised for the Ukip-isation, if you like, of the party".

Claims the pro-Brexit ERG group of Tory MPs is "running the party from top to bottom" are "absolute nonsense", a Wales Office minister has said.

He added: "That is what I mean about listening, and constituency MPs should be there, first of all, to be able to say "I can hear what is going on in my constituency", passing up to their leaders and saying okay this worldwide agenda, most people think is an global agenda, most people think is not working for them". "The 48 per cent were not only sidelined, they were alienated".

"The country deserves better".

Adding to the sense of flux is the fact that significant numbers of Britons are starting to define themselves politically more in relation to their views on Brexit than to an affiliation with a political party.

But the resignations put Mrs May in an even weaker position in Parliament, where her Brexit deal was crushed last month when Eurosceptics and European Union supporters voted against an agreement that both sides say offers the worst of all worlds.

Fallen trees have been blocking railway lines up and down the nation, including between Fareham and Eastleigh this evening. It also delayed trains on the Glasgow-Dumfries line at Stewarton in East Ayrshire and Kirkconnel in Dumfries and Galloway.

A West Norfolk councillor says more politicians should follow the example of the MPs who have quit their parties this week to sit as independents.

Critics say the divisions are acts of grandstanding party politics at a time of national importance, while supporters have applauded the move and say it demonstrates dissatisfaction with how both parties are being run.

Responding to the accusations of defecting MPs like Luciana Berger that he had failed to tackle anti-Semitism in Labour ranks, Mr Corbyn said he was "utterly determined to root out anti-Semitism from our party and our country". They express horror at the way antisemitism has eaten into the party like gangrene and demand surgical intervention. It needs to be a Party where a range of different opinions are held and where healthy debate is encouraged.

Her resignation came not long after Mr Corbyn had sought to play down the significance of the mass resignations earlier in the day, saying that the MPs who left had been elected to carry out the Labour manifesto, and despite having being chosen to "carry out those policies" they had "decided to go somewhere else".

"I therefore encourage her to put this to the test and to trigger a by-election".

"That's why I am so disappointed they have gone and that's why I really want people to stay and fight their corner".

The Independent Group's arrival in the Commons attracted widespread attention on social media as they posed for selfies and settled in.

But Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson said his party had to change or it could "see more days like this". "Its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was not fit to become Prime Minister", according to CNN.
