Apple hits back at Spotify over European Commission complaint

Apple also mentioned in its post how majority of the apps on the store are free, including Spotify itself, and as such they don't pay Apple anything for the downloads if the users don't use any IAPs.

Apple shot back at Spotify on Friday, just days after the music streaming service filed a complaint with the European Union (EU) regulators over anticompetitive practices, accusing the company of wanting "all the benefits of a free app without being free".

Apple's rebuttal argues its case point-by-point, addressing every aspect of Spotify's complaint, even going as far as criticising Spotify for its treatment of artists - stating the music streaming service distributes "the music you love while making ever-smaller contributions to the artists, musicians and songwriters who create it - even going so far as to take these creators to court".

In response, Apple said it has "approved and distributed almost 200 app updates on Spotify's behalf, resulting in over 300 million downloaded copies of the Spotify app".

The Swedish company has launched a website, outlining different ways in which Apple uses its power to make its platform an "uneven playing field".

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been more than clear that services such as the iOS App Store are an essential part of the company's future as consumers hang onto devices for longer and longer periods between upgrades.

Ek said if Spotify were to pay this tax, it would force the music streaming service to raise Premium membership fees well above those of Apple Music's.

Philadelphia Eagles: Golden Tate to the Giants is a best-case scenerio
Tate told reporters after the season that if he didn't stay with Philadelphia, he hoped to latch on with a contender. Meanwhile, the Giants also added outside linebacker Markus Golden on a one-year deal, according to multiple reports.

When Spotify filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple this week, it fired a direct shot at the tech giant's strategy.

Business Insider reached out to Spotify for comment but received no reply. In the end, Spotify said that it wants all third-party apps to be following the same rules, asking why things like Uber rides aren't subject to the "Apple tax" but Spotify subscriptions are. There have been update rejections but these have apparently occurred when "Spotify has tried to sidestep the same rules that every other app follows".

While Apple charges 30 percent digital revenue in the first year, it's 15 percent after that, it said, noting that Spotify has a double-standard about revenue-sharing.

One of Spotify's complaints claimed that Apple was blocking Siri and AirPlay 2 functionality for the app. Even worse, Apple also talked about how Spotify is also squeezing artists and songwriters and is suing them to avoid paying additional royalty payments. And we built a secure payment system - no small undertaking - which allows users to have faith in in-app transactions. Recently, Spotify added new privileges specifically for Samsung users, in an attempt to come out ahead.

The iPhone maker said the App Store contributed to Spotify becoming the business it is today, a public company that generates over a billion dollars of revenue per quarter, according to a statement on Friday.

"We think that's wrong", it said.

Apple's approach has always been to grow the pie.
