Purdue Pharma Agrees To $270 Million Opioid Settlement With Oklahoma

Attorney General Mike Hunter to announce settlement in opioid lawsuit

This settlement only concludes the first of roughly 2,000 lawsuits nationwide.

The epidemic has prompted lawsuits by state and local governments accusing various drugmakers of contributing to the crisis.

This month, company officials acknowledged that they were considering legal options, including filing for bankruptcy. This is the first settlement to come out of the barrage of lawsuits.

Sandy Coats, an attorney for Bridgeport, Connecticut-based Purdue Pharma, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Of more than 3,000 Oklahomans admitted to hospitals past year for drug overdoses that they survived, 80 percent involved prescription opioids, he said. It comes a day after the state's Supreme Court refused a request by Purdue Pharma, Johnson & Johnson, and Teva Pharmaceuticals to delay an upcoming trial for 100 days.

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter sued the three drug companies in June 2017, and the two sides have been taking depositions and jousting over pretrial issues for almost two years.

Opioids, including prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl, were involved in a record 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017 in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Hopefully, this is the first of many".

Then, beginning January 1, 2020, the center will start receiving $15 million a year for five years, for a total of $75 million in additional payments. The reported $270 million settlement compares with Purdue Pharma's $35 billion OxyContin sales revenue stream between 1995 and 2015.

But Cheryl Juaire, whose 23-year-old son Corey died of an overdose in 2011, said she was devastated to hear about the settlement.

According to a lawsuit filed by the state of Massachusetts, Sackler family members received almost $4.3 billion in payouts from Purdue between 2008 and 2016.

Jauire, who lives in Marlborough, Massachusetts, said a complete airing of the facts is the only way to fully hold Purdue to account.

She said the company was probably also in talks with others to settle. In 2007, Purdue and three of its executives pleaded guilty to misconduct in their marketing of OxyContin and paid more $600 million in fines.

Oklahoma contends that Purdue, Johnson & Johnson and Teva bear some responsibility for thousands of opioid deaths across the state, in addition to the health care, law enforcement and treatment costs of the state's addiction crisis.

As the accusations have mounted, the Sacklers have faced personal lawsuits and growing public pressure. But in the past few weeks, the Tate museums in London and the Guggenheim Museum in NY have cut ties with the family, and other institutions have come under pressure to turn down donations or remove the Sackler name.

A MA court filing made public earlier this year found that Sackler family members were paid at least $A5.6 billion from 2007 until last year.
