Boeing 737 Max makes emergency landing in Orlando

U.S. Department Of Transportation To Form Expert Panel Review FAA Certification Of Boeing Max Jets

While investigators have yet to fully determine the cause of the two crashes - Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29, 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019 - anti-stall software added to the 737 Max 8 has become the main point of focus.

Southwest and American Airlines are the two largest domestic owners of 737 Max 8 and 9 aircraft, and are among five airlines that were flying the planes out of Orlando International Airport prior to their grounding, along with WestJet, Air Canada and Gol.

A United States Southwest Airline plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Tuesday, March 26, after it suffered an engine failure.

On March 13, the FAA released a statement that said, "The grounding (of Boeing 737 Max planes) will remain in effect pending further investigation, including examination of information from the aircraft's flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders".

The plane involved in the incident is one of 34 Boeing 737 Max aircraft in the Southwest fleet that were grounded by an FAA emergency order earlier this month after the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302.

As part of the upgrade, Boeing will install as a standard a warning system, which was previously an optional safety feature.

A transportation committee chaired by Texas' U.S. Senator Ted Cruz will hold a hearing on the Max and senators will have a chance to question FAA officials.

Mueller report brings moment of reckoning to USA politics
The White House has not received or been briefed on the report, spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Sunday morning. He said that therefore, Congress will "look at a broader picture", when investigating President Donald Trump.

A spokesman for the FAA told HuffPost that the engine-related emergency on Tuesday's Southwest flight was unrelated to the recent crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia.

Boeing and the FAA decided pilots did not need to be informed about the change to the flight control system when the 737 Max 8 rolled out, helping airlines avoid the cost of more extensive retraining of pilots. According to some media reports, the Lion Air captain was hastily looking through the plane's technical documentation trying to figure out how to switch off MCAS, which was reportedly pushing the plane's nose down. The news came in the wake of two fatal crashes in the space of a few months involving MAX jets. "The aircraft returned and landed safely in Orlando".

It also announced a failsafe that makes it so that if the system causes the plane's nose to point down repeatedly, it will shut off and give pilots total control of the plane.

In a statement given to CBS News, American Airlines, which owns 24 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, is cancelling about 90 flights a day and is extending the cancellations through until the end of April. That was followed by a "certification flight with the FAA" on March 12 - just two days after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed near Addis Ababa, killing 157. Cruz said his goal is to find out what caused the crashes and determine how future crashes can be prevented.

"Who is going to trust an FAA certification while there's a criminal investigation going on undoubtedly involving the FAA", she said.

Dan Elwell, the acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration, defended his agency but acknowledged that as systems become more complex, the FAA's "oversight approach needs to evolve".

The Boeing 737 Max was grounded by U.S. officials two weeks ago following the second deadly crash involving the series of planes.
