Meet the woman behind the first-ever image of a black hole

There actually were a few academic holdouts who denied black holes existed, but now they can't, said Boston University astronomer Alan Marscher, who was on one of four imaging teams. Judging from the image we can see in the centre a black dot, this is the enter of the black hole and the area that has the strongest gravitational pull, not even letting light escape it.

She led the development of the black hole telescope algorithm under the Event Horizon Telescope project.

The image is the first step in more research toward massive black holes, event horizons, and gravity itself.

'This photo of the black hole is awesome, but wait.Enhance!

At the heart of the Milky Way, there's a supermassive black hole that feeds off a spinning disk of hot gas, sucking up anything that ventures too close - even light.

To perform this, the space experts struggled with bad weather and glitchy electric frameworks. They think the event horizon measures just under 25 billion miles (40 billion km) across, about three times the size of Pluto's orbit around the sun. At last, they tried their discoveries against the consequences of a million recreations of what a black hole may resemble, until finally they recognized a match.

The rocket was purchased to launch the Arabsat 6A communications station for the Saudi-based Arabsat consortium of Arab states. The payload is the Arabsat 6A communications satellite built by USA contractor Lockheed Martin for the Saudi company Arabsat.

This helped them collect data about a galaxy called M-87. "Her algorithm was frequently better than its predecessors at reconstructing the original image from the measurements and tended to handle noise better", according to a press release from 2016 from MIT, where she developed the algorithm.

"History books will be divided into the time before the image and after the image", said Michael Kramer from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. And how can we come up with unique ways to merge the instrumentation and algorithms to get at measuring things that you can't measure with standard instruments.

"If immersed in a bright region, like a disc of glowing gas, we expect a black hole to create a dark region similar to a shadow - something predicted by [Albert] Einstein's general relativity that we've never seen before", explained chair of the EHT Science Council Heino Falcke. The project, a collaboration of about 200 scientists - astronomers, engineers, and mathematicians - from around the world linked data collected from a network of radio telescopes scattered across the globe to put together the image.

The rare, groundbreaking image was released by a team of scientists Wednesday morning, and it didn't take long for observers on social media to take notice, mostly in awe.

Harvard University scientist Sheperd Doeleman leads the EHT project. "But what we find for M87 is, at the very fine detail we have, objects change on the timescale of days". "We saw something that really had a ring to it if you can use that phrase".

Jessica Dempsey, another co-discoverer and deputy director of the East Asian Observatory in Hawaii, said the fiery circle reminded her of the flaming Eye of Sauron from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
