Will Iran Sanctions Deter Ambitions?

WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – Iran told world powers on Tuesday that new sanctions would not deter nuclear ambitions.

“Sanctions won’t have any impact on our activities,” said Ramin Mehmanparast, spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry, reported by the AFP. “We don’t find them a deterrent. The more the sanctions, the more determined we will be to pursue our rights.”

Iran maintains pursing a nuclear program is a right.

The announcement by Mr. Mehmanparast comes as Barack Obama is applying pressure on China and Russia to support additional sanctions.

“We still have not lost hope for a solution to the Iranian nuclear program through dialogue with Iran,” said Sergei Ryabkov, a Russian official handling the Iranian matter, reported by the Interfax news agency.

Russia’s statement comes as Mr. Obama scales back the United States policy on nuclear weapons in an overhaul not met by other nations.

“All countries, whether they’re nuclear weapons states, non-nuclear weapons states or aspiring nuclear weapons states, I think should be very clear about what our approach and our strategy is,” said Mr. Obama, reported by the AFP.

“And I do think that when you’re looking at outliers like Iran and North Korea, they should see that over the course of the last year and a half we have been executing a policy that will increasingly isolate them so long as they are operating of accepted international norms,” he said, reported by the AFP.
